Mushrooms and Toadstools Everywhere

Most mushrooms and toadstools are actually edible, the problem being that some aren't and they often look quite similar to ones that are, and some of the ones that aren't edible are extremely toxic. There's also some psycho-active mushrooms that will give you a trip from just one or two little mushrooms, and others where some parts of the thing will be quite edible or will give you a good time but the rest will give you a very bad time.

I have some friends who are foragers, and it turns out there's an awful lot of things growing in the hedgerows, woods and fields that are quite desirable to them. It turns out a lot of crops have wild growing predecessors too, if you know where to look. I really ought to buy a book on these things.

I'd love a good UK field guide for mushrooms

Those big white ones look delicious.

I have scant knowledge of mushrooms but seem to remember that you should never to eat any mushrooms that are inky or leak dark sap, and never eat any with white gills on the underside- I think safe species of most kinds exist but these two rules avoid you confusing them with anything that isn't.

Better to weigh them rather than count as size can vary. 1-5g dry weight will be sufficient.

This is legitimately not from experience, just been doing lots of research

From experience i can tell you that potency differs from crop to crop and year to year so judging a ''dose'' can be difficult, but that's half the fun of course :p
Not that i would ever condone experimenting with hallucinogens of course etc etc etc etc

Don't suppose anyone around Durham area has any land I could possibly get permission to detect on? (Struggling to find any around my area, willing to pay donation and 50/50 on everything found) think this is my only hope. Happy farming ?

Fly Agaric, poisonous but hallucogenic in small quantities. Reckoned the Sami reindeer herders use them to pass the long winters nights.
called fly agaric as you can make a fly killer by boiling them in water
Always fancied a go but never been brave enough----apparently the wimps way is to get the reindeer to eat them and then drink their pee , that way the nasties get filtered out in the reindeer system . Anyone got any reindeer?
