My big idea............. that I havent got time for

I have decided that there must be a student or someone out there with time to take up the below, run with it and make themselves a fortune. All I want is to find the right person that I can help make it work.

The problem

There is no universal 'method' for working in a milking parlour (all parlours are slightly different) making bringing in new labour/relief milkers tricky as new staff have to learn each parlour as 'new', causing potential safety issues and risks from things like contaminated milk, fire, flood etc - the tail markings for example are different in every farm.

This means the farmer has to be on hand to explain simple things like 'where to find XX and XX'

The solution
Every McDonalds across the UK has a simple and universal signage and colour coding system in the kitchens, backed my a method statement, that means that one employee can work in any restaurant across the UK and know what they are doing in seconds.

Someone could design a similar system and apply the above to every milking parlour in the UK - For example every farm should have a clear sign at the entrance explain what to do when any visitor arrives - step 1 please park at XXX Step 2 please call XXXXX Step 4 etc..

You could decide to have this in several languages.

Then you would also have a clearly presented large map of the farm indicating the fields (named) , boundaries etc,

and them a step by step method for bringing the cows in.. etc etc etc

A smaller map of the milking parlour explaining where things like taps, hoses, and washing facilities are. Everything in the parlour clearly marked with a specific symbol (no language issues either).

Another explaining the marking system for cows on medication which should be the same on every farm). and the method for what to do in that instance.

Another explaining emergency procedures.

The business

You design the system, come up with a brand name, you set up the company providing the training to relief milkers on how the system works, you charge farmers for implementing the system on their dairy units (including the clear signage) by a retainer and quarterly visits to update or change any info provided you keep the system the same across all units.

You provide a method statement for all of the above.

You sell the system and the idea to Tescos who demand it on all their supplier units.

Fundamental - the system must be simple to understand available in the major languages and regularly maintained by the system provider who must attend the farm!

Farmers can then -
- Employ relief staff with confidence, without weeks of training or the worry that they wont know what to do (and then the farmer can go on holiday)
- limit the risk of antibiotics, for example, accidently contaminating milk
-limit the health and safety risk of staff on the farm
-Employ anyone trained in the system and expect them to know what they are doing within hours

The future - you provide the same style system for harvest workers (casual tractor drivers in the arable sector)

What do you think ?

I have often thought some type of "farm operations manual" template thing would have been handy for inducting new dairy staff.

Sort of like our basic employment agreement template that you download and then fill in the blanks, many younger farming entrants pick up the bare bones very quickly from pictures and the written word (not all) and that way you can convey your own objectives and values to them at the start.

But I do like the concept, the days past are behind us and the future will be not much like it, especially in terms of recruitment and HR

Thanks for the feedback - the whole thing has to be win win for everyone!

I cant believe that there isn't a student at Harper or someone with access to a dairy and spare time who couldn't be developing this .

low overheads, cash generating etc.

You just need a computer and a logical mind.

You could make yourself the UK specialist in months.

Getting Farmers to change to 1 system is the tough one, I’ve stopped marking ewes scanned for twins this year and saved £50 in spray cans! Yet Dad after 50 years of having his own sheep and system is still really confused by the singles being marked and the twins arnt..
I know your on about milking etc but a simple system with sheep is as follows.

Green = empty (GO off the farm)
Orange = Twins (get ready)
Red = Triplets (danger, trouble ahead :banghead:)
Blue = singles.

To be honest my spare time at harper was spent boozing and general debauchery. Developing a "farm operations template" was a somewhat less appealing option than a quadruple gin and tonic for £3. Happy memories indeed.......if I could remember them.

If we’re standardising colours then you only have one colour there that can be identified by colour blind persons - blue. The only colours safe are grey, black, brown, blue and green/yellow together. Wheel chair acces should be accounted for should your relief milker turns out to be physically challenged and toilets should not be gender assigned.

Tongue in cheek smiley required for the above!

Come on guys, let’s not encourage standardisation of farming practices as it will bring on a whole can of worms.

It is quite a good idea for large farms though.

I'd better not work for you then as all your triplets would be sent up the road!

Ours is:

Blue-single
No mark-double
Green-triplet
Red for dead

No standardised marking in the sheep sector as of yet

I'd be putting off your empties and triplets then, and wouldn't be alone. That's dangerous colours, given that one in twenty males in the UK is red/green colour blind......

This idea is not new in the sheep industry!
At least it wasn't on the Romney Marsh when there were thousands of sheep, all the old shepherds had a marking system for ageing the sheep using paint marks and branding irons, so you knew the exact number of different aged sheep in each flock.

It was a relatively pointless exercise but when one man looked after 500 ewes he needed something to do!!
I am sure in situations where there are continuous processes such as milking it is an excellent idea.
