It did appear strange to give so much info on a first post, especially as it had a photo of the alleged poster. Farming is a small community where someone would know them.

There will be some farmers in this very predicament, so perhaps the prankster (idiot) poster needs to grow up and not make a joke out of a potential serious situation.

There has been similar genuine posts on farming forums in the past. A genuine call for help before the farmer tries to end it all.

I agree 100%.

We all "may" have done some pranks whilst at ag college but I am afraid this one isn't very funny.

Hi - I'm the Principal of the college in question - Kingston Maurward. The profile of the OP was created on Monday and this is clearly a wind-up by a student, which is a shame as it's a serious subject. I am left wondering if they used their own photo, which may have been unwise... ;0)

Thanks to those who have answered sensibly, my farm manager who's name they have cannibalised has laughed this off and appreciated that people would care - for those who are interested, our dairy continues to meet M&S Gold Standard and is doing very well thanks, notwithstanding the usual challenges of managing livestock and the vagaries of inflation and all the fun that farming always brings.

Cheers, Luke
Hopefully as a follow up to this, firstly the students can be given an exercise which addresses a scenario such as this - it happens a lot, just minus the college link.

Secondly, I hope they are all already familiar with the high incidence of mental health problems in farming - obviously some will have experienced this themselves , and be aware of the recent tragic Young Farmer suicide - and this can be used to raise awareness of how to help someone who is struggling.

As a former farm business adviser, I have helped with cases similar to this and even - in a work capacity, not someone I knew, visited a farmer in hospital who had tried to commit suicide by setting fire to himself. It's a real issue and one that is likely to get worse as we transition through BPS withdrawal, made even worse with high input prices and increasing Red Tractor and other hassle.

Must admit that I too had my suspicions when I first saw this thread but didn’t like to voice them. What impressed me was that all responses were thoughtful and kind. Rather than remove this thread, perhaps it can remain as a reminder to all of us that this kind of thing can and does happen.

I appreciate that maybe it won’t be that easy to identify but maybe this might have been a call for help from a student unsure how to go about it.

I hope it can be a learning exercise for them either way.

I’m not sure about this. I know the area very well as there’s only one Ag college in Dorset that I know of? The OPs username is very similar to the name of the college farms manager’s?? Would he really want to post something like this that employers could potentially see? Or is this some kind of wind up? Don’t want to be disrespectful and in some ways I hope I’m wrong but in other ways I obviously hope this isn’t a genuine post. If the OP does want someone to talk to I’m not far away
I’m thinking it’s a vegan phishing around for dirt!

The OP joined at 3.30 on monday, posted his 'story' at 3.29.

Not seen since, despite many of you taking the time to answer with sensible and supportive suggestions. Chris involved, and FCN.

A wind up, to be sure, and this OP needs a slap. IMHO of course.

While I’m all for a good wind up, and wasting my time isn’t really an issue, it has wasted FCN resources. Resources that could have been used to actually help a farmer who needed it.

I suggest the OP quietly does a little donation to them to put things right.

but on the flip side it’s heartening to see how farmers come together to protect and help one of their own.

Thanks all. I'll be having a chat to students next week.
Please don't right this off to quick, it maybe a Student having a joke or it maybe a Student or a member of Staff who genuinely has a problem.
Shocking what was going on behind the scenes when I was at College, not sure if the principal ever knew , couldn't of because staff remained that shouldn't have.
Also not unknown for College staff to commit suicide and many have several staff off with mental health issues.

Thanks for the concern, but given I live next door to the farm manager and have done for over 5 years, I'm fairly sure I have a handle on what's going on, we have no staff off long term sick with MH issues and a range of support measures in place. It was also the FM brought this thread to my attention.
