My data's being gobbled!

Hallo, I've a techie problem:

I use a PAYG dongle for mobile internet and have, by process of elimination, come to the reluctant conclusion that the steep rise in data consumption somehow comes from this otherwise wonderful site.

Is there a means of tweaking my android tablet's settings to reduce this, please?

@primmiemoo nothing has changed recently (in the past 3 years), but the system has always had the live update of alerts so a page even when loaded, does keep refreshing to a degree. I understand from others that the android app uses a lot less data as it caches more info. Worth a try?

Was worried I'd let "something" into the device, so I've given it a scan for lurgies, too, which was clear.
