Hi there, things are a bit better than they were.

We have a group of 5 currently under treatment. They had Draxxin/Meloxidyl on the 19th and again on the 26th of this month. One looks horrendous and will probably die. During the night we lost one of the 5 but it actually looked to be on the mend! The group have been with us for 5 weeks today.

It was still warm first thing so I had a little look at its lungs for curiosity more than anything. I’ll attach the picture as I was amazed. It had been functioning with only one good lung. The spleen looked very oversized as did the liver. I’m guessing that’s due to the calf fighting infection.

Yesterday we pulled 3 calves back in from pasture. All with a droopy ear and temp of 105. They were treated immediately and all look much better today. They came from 2 separate deliveries and had not been in contact with each other.

And so it goes on......

i have dealt with mycoplasma bovis 3 years ago on my farm
never want to see it again
bought in 30 charolais weanlings 8 months old
2 days later they started getting sick
anitbiotics draxxin etc were used an only saved a few
best approach we had by the end was to feed antibiotic powder to the full herd in the meal for about a month
we tried to cut the powder after 10 days and temperatures started to rise so had to stick with it
lost 8 charolais bulls to it.
comrades that survived didn't thrive like the other batches before them either.
cost me about 11 thousand euro and that's not taking lost thrive into account.
I'm sorry I'm late seeing this thread. Do you happen to recall the name of the antiobitic powder you added to the 8 months olds dry feed?

I have a calf with a droopy weepy ear. Might be worth me getting some.

I had one the same last week, two days after it came. Straight in with draxxin and metacam, it had a temperature, the threat of mycoplasma makes you paranoid at times. If the ear doesn’t clear up but the calf seems otherwise ok like mine treat with depocillin as well, it’s just a cheap straight penicillin only £7/ bottle they only need 1-2 ml. I think sometimes the powerful drugs don’t always treat minor ailments like a simple ear infection if you’re lucky and that’s all it is, but the penicillin does and has some effect on the mycoplasma if you’re not

I would speak directly to the farmers where the problem calves come from.

Also might be worth posting on any NZ farm forums asking for advice as they have a lot more experience with this illness.

I wouldn't bother seeking advice for treating infected animals from NZ. The recently introduced outbreak of M. bovis has led to an eradication programme. If an animal is tested positive or has a confirmed case, the whole herd is culled for slaughter ASAP.
This programme has a budget of exceeding $NZ80 Million. To date it seems to be working with very few new herds discovered in the last 3 months, and many under surveillance (having purchased or been in contact with animals from earlier infected herds) now cleared.

Can I recommend you ask your vet about Chloromed 150. It’s a powdered antibiotic that goes in with the calves milk for 6 or 7 days. We have had good success with it regarding Mycoplasma. Wouldn’t be surprised if bvd was also playing a part? Best of luck!

My cattle are too old for milk now.
