Mystery Bank Credits

Run out of ideas so putting this out to the greater good.

Every six months or so there’s a direct credit into my bank account. Bern happening for 18 months

It’s not a set amount each time but it’s now into 4 figures.

My bank gave no idea who it’s from and say they can’t trace the account due to data protection.

I’ve asked them to refuse the credit do it bounced back to the originating account, but again they say they can’t help which surprises me somewhat.

No reference on the payment other than a string of numbers that means nothing to me.

There is a “name “ but all it says is “DGS”.

I’ve googled and searched companies house numerous times, even contacted a few companies locally with a name that might fit but nothing adds up.

Short of closing my business account what else do I do to stop the payments, but would also like to return the money to rightful owner!

What's it they say about "never looking a gift horse in the mouth", 4 figures each time or in total?

I would be insisting the bank deal with it before you go to the law/banking ombudsman.
It might be an innocent mistake, it might not.

I would suspect you don't want the black mark against your name if there's something fishy.
They certainly can deal with it if they choose to.

If I can’t find the true owner that is what will happen, already have a charity in mind that would make good use of it, a local one with a personal connection.
I wouldn't give it away just in case they chase you for it at a later date, don't think there's a time limit when they can reclaim money from a wrong account, in the mean time treat it as a interest free loan.

The bank may contact you at some point in the future with a ‘request to return the money’, but it’s pretty much at your discretion to do so.

About 10 years ago I received £4000 from a mystery overseas bank transfer. Several months later the bank contacted me to explain that it had been sent to the correct account number, but the wrong sort code, and the money was from a Scottish missionary group in Africa.
They stressed that it was at my discretion to return the money, which I duly did after the bank explained it wasn’t a scam but an honest cock up.

DGS , probably an abbreviation for "Do Good Shít", use it as karma , if you don't require the proceeds then put it to use in some form of charity or play it forwards.
Anything else will be tainted or cursed.

Possibly.
