The only benefit from N before the standard timings has been when tiller retention is paramount (late sown crops that go into stem extension before finishing tillering). I can see some logic with hybrid barley in the SW but the earlier doses I mention were early Feb rather than late Feb, not mid Jan.

To be honest if hybrid barley needs this sort of left-field agronomy it's not worth bothering with.

Am I confident in the long run statistical fact? Yup. If we get zero rain in January would I expect February to be drier? Nope. Will I be applying fert in January? Nope. Will I be applying fert in Feb? Quite likely but currently can't be certain.

If I could accurately predict the weather for valentine's week in the UK a month ahead, I'd be richer than being a farmer.

In a pleasing twist, Mrs teslacoils has booked valentine's weekend to go to London on a campanology trip, so some flexibility now on the fert spreading. NV I am not going on this trip.

Currently I can't think of a better January, and infact late December. It's so nice I may even go.....outside.

Good old Syngenta, …..who want you to put that much N on early so they can sell you their expensive Modus PGR to keep it standing. They’d sell you their Grandmothers in a wheelbarrow if they could!
Use less N, no need for Modus (just CCC) and end up with decent sized grains instead of a heap of pine needles!

But put some N on in Feb to prevent the crop going yellow and losing too many tillers.

That's our exact intention.

However, given this was impossible in each of the last two years, there's surely a case now for going just before the end of the current dry spell (currently forecast 28th Jan).

Plenty of folks on here with some miles on the clock will no doubt remember years ago when throwing on some N on OSR on a good frosty day in January was considered 'cutting edge'.

Old enough to remember putting on some N on winter barley in the autumn and then spraying it for mildew in early November.
I would like to get a little early N on backward or thin crops of winter barley in early Feb but thankfully all crops are thick, lush and green this year, so hopefully will not need to go till late Feb/early March.

I seem to remember having a discussion about this kind of thing before. Spraying crops with fungicide before Christmas etc, was always too cynical for that.

Now that crops are worth more, we are discussing exploring more expensive methods of growing them.
