Nasty sheep injury

Found this ewe caught with foot down an outside slat this evening & she jarred it trying to get out. Can’t get vet on phone. Apart from antibiotics & metacam should I dress it or leave it exposed?

As long as it is not broken I would probably give it a chance as well, personally I would wrap it with wadding and vet wrap after a good spray of Terramycin as long as pain relief and injectable antibiotics are given. Would also bring her in to make checking it less stressful for her. I wouldn't leave it covered for too long, just long enough to allow the rawness start to heal and keep flies off.

We had similar injury in a bulling heifer a few years ago. As well as injectable ABs and initial painkiller to start with, we had to keep her in on clean bedding, and wash it out with an iodine solution every day (use a syringe), which in her case meant having to halter her. Not dressed, on vet's advice.

It took as I recall, about 6 weeks to heal but she came right in the end, just had a thickened scar - but it was a lot of work.

Had this happen last year... wound was pretty much the same as yours... I put half a can of Terramycin into it... 12ml of alamycin.. 3ml of pen strep every day for 5 days.. and wrapped it up in cotton wool and vet wrap... took the vet wrap off on day 5... threw up everywhere, never seen so many maggots in my life come crawling out of it .. cleaned it all up... doozed in Terramycin spray and injected with alamycin again... 5 days later she died what must of been a slow and painful death and I felt like sh!t because I knew I’d kept her alive for myself not for her welfare and should have got her shot the same day I found her....

Difference might be time of year, less flies at the moment and if OP keeps a closer eye and changes or removes bandaging more frequently might be a chance? I know what you are saying, most of us will have prolonged suffering in the hope that it comes right and not for financial gain just simply because we hope we can fix it. Nine times out of ten your gut tells you anyway, it's just that one in ten where you swither.

You tried and did what you thought was best at the time tho. Just one thing a vet told me years ago that when alamycin/terramycin and penecillin are used together, terramycin may interfere with the beneficial effects of penicillin and reduce its effectiveness in treating infection.

If you can dress it with vet wrap and put some green oils gel in the wound - amazing stuff for healing wounds We use it in bad mastitis and blowfly cases. Helps keep dirt out and flies off.

We had a donkey get wire round its leg once and had just been pulling at it over night cut down to the bone stuck honey on it every day and new wrap healed up enough within 2 week to take the wrap off and let it dry in the air but been a sheep id imagine that will just die after you have spent the time and effort getting it right as is there usual trick

Friend had a pony which did the same and had a similar injury. They packed the wound with antiseptic gel, and vet- wrapped it. Changed the dressings regularly. Kept clean and dry. It took 6 weeks to heal completely. The pony was never lame.

A real +1 for Battles summer fly cream. Amazing stuff for wounds.

It really depends on how much time you have, and whether this ewe is lame or in pain from the injury.
If it's the latter, and / or you can't put weeks of nursing to it, then euthanise.

I've sewn up some pretty bad wounds on dogs and hounds but never anything that bad. Considering what recovered injuries we see in wild animals, it wouldn't be hopeless. It depends how fresh the wound is and if the cut surfaces are still raw and if the skin edges can be drawn together.
