nasty umbilical

Not seen this before, any advice welcomed.
48 hrs old, lamb is thriving. But it looks awful and surely going to lead to infection ? Anything to do other than repeat iodine ?
TIA.

It could be showing a loop of bowel. Does the mass reduce when the lamb is held with its navel upwards?

It does look like a hernia from that angle - need a vet to close the opening - but if it isn't, it could be tied off with cotton thread wound around, and kept iodined to help dry it up.

No visible loop of bowel, unless it could be held within that mass ? It didn't reduce/withdraw when held on its back. Does that suggest not bowel ?

If it doesn't look like bowel trapped, it's possible that the navel is swollen because of infection or damage, and that's what makes it look like a hernia.

If it were mine, I'd give it a good spray of veterinary iodine, a jab of oxytet and possibly a tiny jab of metacam, and keep an eye on him. I wouldn't be keen to tie it, just in case there's a tiny hole or loop that could strangulate.

I've seen lambs and calves resolve themselves. It might take time, though.

Just a thoughtlet: Is it a ram lamb born with a split urethra as well as having a big navel? Something about the fleshy bit at top right?

Ewe lamb, so no complications there. Have given 1ml betamox, .5ml metacam , plenty iodine, will repeat and see how she goes. Thanks for the help.
