It a a simple design that allows stones get trapped in under the door , if you havnt the experience to know that the back door is under pressure when tipped up but hasn't gone down and see the stone blocking it and try freeing the stone then your taking your life in your own hands without knowing it.
FFS the door is not under pressure,

Please go and look at one of these trailers in operation, the door hardly moves in normal operations.
When as described a stone was jammed, then it is shear weight of the door and gravity that let the door drop striking the lad not pressure as you keep banging on about.

Look at it again the door moves a good bit , enough to kill people.

The stone only gets there by it being loaded badly... spilling... 99% of the time it wont stop there, (i have never had one sit there) you can still tip the load and lower it down again and then remove the stone that will then NOT be holding the door up, the metal frame holds the door when trailer is lowered.

Your right but what does loaded badly mean , stones fall off digger buckets all the time unless you only half fill the bucket , the foreman would do some looking at you then. I'd say you could upgrade your 99% to 99.9999% , it only takes one stone in its lifetime to do the harm.

As I said its never happened to me, I bought the trailer used and the top one of the rear "grille" bars is bent a little so something got stuck at some point

I'm not sure the boys that built the trailer should get sued or be liable. They obviously didn't intend for that to happen. The young lad shouldn't have been near the trailer if not properly trained. Accidents happen, others must learn the lesson. Heavy equipment is extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. As has been said with proper use by conscientious operators no problems have arised.

Farming is one of the most dangerous professions? Why? Because some farmers don't take proper precautions, they take short cuts.

Don't blame the manufacturer blame the folk using the kit.

Common sense and training are both lacking in this day and age.

Tragic.

I agree with your post, but also, please consider.
As a machinery manufacturer it is good practice (and mandated in many industries) to reduce disk by the hierarchy of controls. If the machine was CE marked to the machinery directive (legal requirement) then it should have followed the rpinciples of
1) design the risk out
2) implement engineering controls to reduce the risk
3) operational controls to mitigate the risk

from what i gather the desing was using the third method - the oeprator needed to know that if they did somethign wrong, it could result in injury (or fataility). In the industries i refer to, it is required that all operational risks are highlighted in the user document (the user holds responsability to read it and apply common sense)
