Nearly an accident.

I am not sure where to post this.

I run a BMW x5 for farm trailer dutys, 2005 model with 35000 miles on the clock.
Yesterday afternoon on the return run the right rear tyre fell off the beamer!!
Only low speed and was able to stop before the disc ran out of the wheel rim.
All 5 studs sheared off.
Trailer is a twin axle Bateson 2 cow size empty at the time.

Imagine that on the M way!!

Anyone had this happen before, any thoughts as to the cause?

Acorn.

Was speaking to a friend who is a mechanic with the local council. Last Friday 1 of their bin lorries lost a pair of wheels. Vosa have been in and gone over all paperwork with a fine toothed comb and have said if the wheels had hit something or somebody then the outcome would have been a whole lot worse than its going to be for both the driver and the operator (council)

recall step dad saying years ago stopped at a set of lights in town on a hill bit of a bump and a set of tires off each side of a truck trailer come off rolled past the truck down the line of cars and hit some buildings on the other side of the road

that could have gone pear shaped big time

heard of a few cases guy with rattle guns not set right putting on nuts only hand tight and set of tires comeing off cars .. alos common to hear of tire guys snapping front studs off were last people realy cranked them up bit of brake dust rust etc etc and the studs snap out

Was in the fast lane going down the m6 and a lorry wheel bounced over the central reserve and hit the car two infront of us:eek:,they were lucky as it hit the bonnet and bounced over the other two lanes onto the banking, have heard of people being killed by similar incidents.

My dad had loads of trouble with his x3 (mostly brakes) they aren't built great.(n)

Hope your well @acorn ,your wheel falling off will be caused by the weight of your wallet.:D

Back wheel fell off my (ex) bosses pickup when I was driving it home, no one else around, just saw the wheel overtake me and roll 500m down the steepest bank.
went down to get the tyre and was a hands and knees job on the way back up. middle of summer 30 degrees. Was not impressed with the mechanic who didnt clean the threads off before putting the wheel back on that morning.

I'd be interested to see the remains of the studs. Is the metal clean? Or are there worm trails of rust then a little piece of clean to show that the 'fatigue' has been quietly happening for a while. Both are scary but for interests sake there may be a clue in either failure.....Wheel nuts done up too tight rather than too loose.
I may be anal in my nuts tightness(And you can take that any way you want:rolleyes:) But I feel that you really do have to take care with things like tightness hence I always use a torque wrench and not simply rely on the windy gun.

Rear wheel came of a JD just outside here lad had a full Marshall trailer full of crusher run on the back, it went over the top of the neighbours car, a corsa, flattened the back end, and carried on down the main road, came to a stop upright at the next road junction. It all seemed to happen in slow motion, quite surreal to see. One of those did that just happen moments.

Alloy wheels need doing up less tight than steel ones. Don't remember whether BMW have studs and nuts or a single combined part. Certainly there would be a clue in the wheel holes. If the holes are elongated, mis-shaped or otherwise badly damaged, then one, more or all fixings would have been running slack, which is a maintenance issue, specifically a lack of regular maintenance. If the studs sheared suddenly it could either be due to over-tightening, overloading or a combination of both. The threads will also give a clue as they should stretch and virtually seize if they are overtightened to the extent that the studs could shear..

Pictures as requested.

No evidence of worn or elongated holes.

Marks on top of the sheared studs are from the drill used to extract them. (in the event once the drill got hold, the studs went further in and thru the flange)

Now awaiting 20 new studs!

Interesting. No long term fatigue from the clean metal.
I'm no expert but perhaps they were done up too tight? Ask your friendly BMW mechanic. Not the man at the front of house, get round the back and ask the man with dirty hands. Well, clean, as it is a BMW after all.
Having re-lived my experience this evening with trailer tyre blow-outs on motorways I would do some research to see if there is an answer to your breakage as I certainly wouldn't want a recurrence.
Like your train of thought in ordering 20 though.
