Hard to say without seeing the wheel and threads but there does appear to be flattened threads on at least two of the studs which would seem to indicate that the wheel has been moving in and out over them. Are they one piece fasteners or studs which stay on the hub with the wheels attached by nuts?

One of my BMWs did the same thing. In this instance, it was a 3-Series. All studs sheared of with no warning. The wheel didn't fall off though, the hub just spun in the wheel centre!

Morons in tyre garages have a lot to answer for with the windy gun. Not once have I seen a torque wrench used properly
Had the front end balanced on the daihatsu in the week, wheel man put the nuts on with air, then came back with the torque( don't trust the guns ) he was right, one and a half turns till the double click (y)

Slightly off topic here but @Landyman.
I have a friend who is in the metal treatment business and one of his everyday tools is a scanning electron microscope. Having seen the pictures that this machine takes to show the crystalline structures of certain items it is fascinating!

More pictures.

I hope overtight studs was the problem. In my defence I have never taken the wheel off.
