Neighbour does our grain hauling???

The last couple of days I've been approached by a neighbour with the following proposition...

  • We do his combining FOC
  • He does all our corn leading FOC (with our trailers)
  • We buy a baler and do his baling, he pays
My initial thought is it could work as he has tractors and men available at harvest, whereas we have started a new enterprise which is taking at least one man out of the harvest team, that leaves myself and combine drive 100% dedicated to harvesting.
Our combine is getting a bit long on the tooth, so the extra work would justify a newer higher capacity model.
We both use the same central storage location, and is ideally placed inbetween us (4 miles)
We both use baling contractor and have both been let down by him, if we did run a baler, I'd drive it and clear what our combine had cut, there would also be the likely chance of picking up another 1000 bales from another neighbour.
I've done some figures, and he'd come out a few hundred quid better than he is now, we would be a few hundred down, but with the income from the baling we would be better off, without the stress of finding hauling men and a baler to turn up on time!

.... my only reservation (being my cynical self) is that, it wouldn't be unfeasible for him to tip the odd load of ours in one of his sheds (I stress, i have no grounds that he would, but it is possible).

Is there anyway I can make sure all our grain goes into store without an odd load getting intercepted.

.... or is it my trust issues?

really do hope he doesn't read tff as he would certainly be able to work out your mistrust in him. personally I would remove this post and stay good neighbours

If you do 100 acres of combining for him he will owe you £3500.
Carting 100 acres for you can't possibly come to that?
Will he cart more acres than you would cut?
Yes, he would haul more for us than we'd cut for him

I had considered this, but the more i think about it, the more I think it illustrates my trust issues rather than my mis-trust for him, just looking for ideas/processes to migrate these thoughts, overall i think it could work well

Keep count of the trailers that leave the field? And make sure they correspond with what goes to store!

Without working anything out I would prefer to be in his boots

Combine rates are £35- 45 /acre

Carting at £25:hr ? And 10ac/hr plus is possible - Assuume half that harvest speed and sounds like the neighbour would be getting rather a good deal ?

I would simply offer to do his combining at contacting rates and pay for his carting at contractors rates

Pay and be paid - saves any fall outs

If you are worried about him taking the odd load - would be stealing well over £1000 @10t - would u not be worried about him actually turning up to haul. Maybe some important livestock issues may arise. What about breakdowns? Would he help fix at all or only when cutting his. Who gets to cut first?
Can't see it working. What I have learned is never to lend anything or barrow anything. Rent or rent out

We have 500 acres, he has 150, he'd put 2 men and tractors on

As said before, we have a new enterprise starting and will take at least a man out, this way makes it easier for me to have a harvest team ready

Did you wake up that morning intent on becoming a baling contractor, and buying and financing a big baler, as well as a bigger combine?
If you have a man and tractor able to sit on a baler you could put both on a 16t trailer.
If you actually fancy doing it, disregard the above.

Just reading the OP aloud, I must say it sounds good to me. The benefits of it all sound like they can be valued in far more than just pounds and pence.

You need a new combine, and the extra work will justify it.

You want your own baler, as does he, or at least someone who will turn up when they are needed. Sounds like a plan. You can bale what is cut at your own pace, all good.

By the sounds of it, if you play your cards right, the 150 acres of arable might also end up being your drilling bag as well?

Sounds like a fine partnership to me.
