Nelson Winter Wheat - anyone grown it?

I was interested in potentially trying the Group 1 e wheat Nelson.

Heygates seem to like the variety as an end user and it could attract a premium in addition to any milling premium. It also has a very good disease resistance profile which appeals to me as a mixed farmer and with the industry losing fungicide actives plus the shift in their effectiveness.

I would imagine it may be short of yield compared to varieties on the recommended list but I was interested in verdicts from anyone that has grown it.

Nelson is relatively early and has as good a septoria resistance as any variety available. We have not seen any new samples in the last week but the early ones we tested were all 14.6 - 15.5 Proteins, Hagberg 320 - 400 and Spec Weights 78.3 - 80.0 kg/glass. When you consider these results are achieved with minimum spends in the region of £30 per hectare a slightly lower yield isn’t the end of the world when compared to some varieties input costs.

Seed is getting tight already with no opportunity to import any so we would advise anyone interested in trying some to get their name in it quite quickly. We don’t think there is much more than 70 - 100 tonnes of C2 seed left available.

Send me a message if you need any more information.

Thanks

It's our second year growing it. We seemed to have gone too high with the seed rate this year as we have a huge amount of straw and around the 8 ton /ha mark on the grain. It's cheaper to grow but has suffered this year from ear disease. I think it would be a good second wheat drilled later on. But if you are growing huge tonnages of wheat I wouldn't use it.

Thanks for all the replies.

I’m interested too in growing programmes. I should imagine it would still need a reasonable amount of nitrogen/fertility to achieve 14% protein.

It’s supposed to stand well but would a standard growth regulator pay?

Also what would be an appropriate fungicide programme. If Nelson is disease resistant I was thinking maybe a standard flag leaf would pay but having read what @cows r us has said do you target the ear or maybe just a T2.5? Obviously you have to be mindful of the season and react accordingly.

Ok then one fungicide to hedge your bets late flag leaf, early ear wash. Does that sound better!
