@ollie989898 I've got a new ley just gone in, there is a blanket of fat hen showing on part of it, is MCPA the spray to use?

Unfortunately a rather pricey mix with lots of white clover + chicory, plaintain and red clover, which I'm sure will be wiped out with the fat hen 🤦‍♂️

I had a field similar last year, and took an early cut of silage off it (3 bales/ac). It analysed surprisingly well (11.8ME, 14%CP) and left just clover and ryegrass behind. It was looking so bad that I had been ready to write it off, either through chems or cultivation, but now glad I didn’t.
Due for cutting now/soon and hardly a weed in sight.👍

couple of False seed beds is good way. might not wipe out every weed but if rain/dry conditions happen that facilitate its success then the smothering type flush you can get as in exmoor Daves prob. will not happen , then topping later will suffice.
Topping with a sharp bladed mower type as well and even spreading of toppings.

but Few these days have the patience to do it :D tbf it does need the right weather combination though to work nicely .

should be able to do this stuff in yer sleep :sneaky: ....... its basics.

Bit of a blanket of fat hen!

The rest of the field and the headland was cultivated/ drilled about 10days after the bit with the fat hen, so i guess effectively stale seed bedded.

But the green bit is looking a hell of a crop of fat hen 😅

Edit.... the fat hen appears to be in lines because it's bad where the 3m kale lines were previously, the former turnip lines are much cleaner

@ollie989898 would it be ok to add hurler to thistlex to beef up the kill on nettles ??
Its a 17 acre field formerly used by the horsey crowd and its covered with buck thistles thistles and big clumps of nettles as well as the odd ragwort .
Would like to spray it before letting out calves .
If i had got possesion earlier i would have ploughed it but its grazing for this year

When we moved here, it was overrun with nettles and thistles, like acres of it under nothing but weeds. I had the Dow fella come visit, as he lived not far away anyway, and he said that Thistlex was actually better at controlling nettles than Pastor (which is essentially Thistlex + Hurler).
As a result, I sprayed 170ac with Thistlex that first year. Half of it needed a follow up the following year, but the reduction was pretty amazing tbh.

I’d have no qualms about mixing the two, but also wouldn’t be worried about using just Thistlex for thistles AND nettles. Definitely add Hurler if there are docks there too though, ime.

I am getting a bit disillusioned about chemical treatments. I quite understand these chemicals make the weeds look sick and appear to go down. But there is no Joe Frazier effect. They go down but sadly come back to life.
Here is a pic of some docks we had sprayed off last season with the recommended chemical sprayed by a professional ie not us😄
Looks like it was a foliar feed not a killer.
The lines are the drains we renewed not spray misses.
I am wondering what to do this year.

doing just that, seems to help thislex effect on nettles, I hear what @neilo says but I think , as usual, timing is everything and early application really helps. I’ve got a bit behind and need all the help I can get at the moment. Suspect I will be going over some of this again….poss several times !

Think I would apply something to those strips this year to prevent seed return , stock as heavily as poss and see what next spring brings….there are no quick solutions when dealing with historical problems….. sadly !
