Network file server?

As per title, how simple is it to set up a file server or is there a simpler way to do what I need?

Basically what I want to do is have a way of storing files, farm assurance documents, herd records, invoices etc so I can access them from any device I’m using on the home network, ( smart phone, tablet, dairy computer, laptop etc.)
I know I maybe could do it with some form of cloud storage, but being old fashioned I’d would happier having stuff physically here. (Especially as our broadband connection can be flakey at times)

Any not too ‘techie’ suggestions?

TIA

Another vote for OneDrive. Setting up a file server is quite a bit of work. If you are wanting to connect a smart phone, tablet etc then you will be using the WIFI of your broadband as you wont be hard connected.

OneDive will keep a physical copy on your local machine and then sync them to cloud storage.

You can then download the App to access them on your smart phone or tablet.

You get 5GB free or a monthly subscription if you want 1TB.

Simple to set up and use.

What's the advantage of OneDrive over dropbox?

There isn't.

Its just that I use OneDrive as it is integrated into Microsoft Office so makes my life easy.

There are lots of cloud storage that you can use, these are the ones that I have accounts with. The free storage provided will vary by company.

  • DropBox
  • OneDrive
  • Box
  • Mega
  • Tresorit
  • Google Drive
  • iCloud

Right. I don't have a 365 account as I prefer to buy an install licence and have a one off cost. I must say I find it pretty good to work from in Office, but wondered if there was something I was missing.

I use a Qnap nas on site for this. Synology do them as well.
I like having it all on site as our broadband can't deal with files of any size. (far too slow).
whilest I do use google drive a bit, but only for small stuff.
Western Digital do them with drives already installed, but I prefer to install my own. But that might be an easier option for you?
The NAS devices can also be used for CCTV cameras etc also and many other jobs such as mysql database server etc, so really handy.

I have a 365 account which is £5.99 per month for one user. The family account, 5 users is better value at £7.99

I have over 120GB of files in OneDrive that I can access from any of my devices with either a phone signal or WIFI. Or any PC that is connected to the internet.

The 365 account means I always have the latest version of Office on up to 5 different PC's along with the mobile app version on my iPhone.

You need to work out what size storage you require before you decide which route you want to go down.

I use Icloud for my storage, just looked and I have 10 years of farm "stuff" stored, use Xero for accounts, Greenlight grower for crops so they are backed up to their own cloud storage and Uniform for the cows backs up to its own system. My office computer which I am typing this with has almost nothing stored on it, I do have a half decent internet connection though.

Have a look at a NAS drive solution. Basically a file server/storage device connected to your local network, but pretty much plug and play.
