I've got nothing against silos but it would limit its uses when empty and we already have a loader that I would never want to be without!

I think they are a good option if you need additional storage to complement an existing shed with elevators.
I understand that, and indeed that is why we decided against a silo, but if I had outlying land that I had to move a loader to, it makes more sense. The other factor that appealed to me was that it could not be used for anything else. Sheds here always end up full of cattle!

Have you considered a silo? No loader needed and you can start drying right from the beginning. Have a look at Dan corn. We thought about it a few years ago and it didn't suit but would be great in your situation.

Would you need planning permission for one of these?
Always thought the new ones are good especially with stirrers.

How much would a decent sized silo cost? say 500t with drying floor etc? I have no idea.

Couple of years ago 1000t silo was just over 100k when I had a quote to put up 6

I can build sheds for half that and they can store other stuff like machinery when empty not just grain

600t with auger, stirrers, emptying auger and drying floor was 60k when we were looking. You'd need to add a heat source to that. I loved the idea of being able to fill it as we harvested and dry straight away. We would have used it for feed so just kept filling with barley then wheat and it would all come out mixed.

I read it as lay 4inches, put laterals in and lay another 4inches so 8 inches deep between laterals and 4 inches deep underneath them IFYSWIM?
Don't think a 4" deep channel is enough. Ours are 9" deep channels.

However if there's 2 layers of mesh in the bottom, maybe a 8" deep channel wouldn't need much below it. @Derky

Im struggling to follow what the depth has to do with it ? Its the width that counts. Thus promoting the most air flow up. Ours were designed by th whites grain boys.

We looked at gas for our latest drier for several reasons:

  • You can tie into a fixed price for longer
  • No big fuel tank on site, taking up space
  • No risk of fuel attracting thieves
  • Gas burns cleaner (future legislation?)
However, the cost of getting gas to the site was only just going to be covered by the saavings over the lifespan of the drier (and that was on 2010 oil prices).

We are just going through planning for a new 1500t on floor grain store with drying.

Looking for any advice/tips from anyone who has done similar.

It is on a green field site on a new block of land that we have taken on.

Planning is in for a 40x24m shed which will be split in two by a tunnel and then probably wooden drying floors.

Just getting quote in for electric connection, 150m to a pole. [emoji33]

Thinking of one big electric fan with a propane burner, I like the idea of stirrers but never used them, any good??

It's been a while since we've done anything like this so interested if there are any new ideas for similar stores?
We would be very pleased to provide you with a comparative quote for a quality CE building if you are not already sorted?

I do worry that oil is not a clean enough fuel for drying grain. We had an oil burner in an old store (it was prehistoric so not great comparison I know) and it did used to taint the grain.

We used to be gas, I had my reservations re kero but the cost difference cant be ignored

if legislation changes and forces gas then we would have to change
