New battery?

After being unused for a week our Puma 160 wouldn’t start on Monday.
Got it charged up and running and did an hour or more on the road. It didn’t work yesterday, and this morning it won’t start again.
Looks like we need a new battery!
Less than impressed on a 15 plate tractor, so I don’t think a direct replacement.
So, are any other batteries better, or is it just Hobson’s choice?

Don't know about batteries bit although I have heard of one that had a lot of earth dust etc between the terminals and when all this stuff got damp it earthed across the terminals.

perhaps you should disconnect battery when fully charged to see if there is discharge fault , that is what happened to our JD 2040 and the starter solenoid was at fault. but I have also heard that batteries on new tractors do not last very long

Someones been telling you some rubbish, I wouldn't always go round spouting out 'what you have heard'.
this was told to me a few years ago by an owner of a 3 year old Same who had a flat battery one morning and he was informed by the guy who supplied the new battery , so according to you the battery supplier has been spouting rubbish about batteries

Wouldnt be suprised, probably bad mouthing the batteries used in said Same to big up his own batteries that he was selling to the bloke.
You said yourself this was a few yrs ago, things might have changed now. I bet nearly all new tractors go many years before needing a new battery!

I thought this is what this site is all about passing on information, it seems like you have had a bad day so do not take it out on me

Well it certainly wouldn’t be the first time.

Whereas most suppliers I can think of are genuine and credible, I have also heard over the years some of the biggest loads utter and absolute tosh spouted by one or two chancers in a bid to try and avoid replacing a warranted battery.

New batteries on tractors are job lot orders on the cheap. Half the quality, do yes they fail after a couple of years. Put a proper one on and it’ll be fine.

Aren't JD batteries just rebadged Varta??????

JD batteries used to be Varta but I think now they aren't.

New batteries usually last better than replacements. My 2004 reg JD 6420 is on it's original battery and started today after sitting in the shed for 2 weeks. When I bought it I did specify the 154Ah battery instead of the 110Ah one. So that's over 14 years on the original battery, quite good I reckon.

Thanks for. the replies
We’ll certainly take the advice and disconnect the battery overnight and use multimeter on it, but I fear the worst so will research a decent quality replacement

Battery technology has come on leaps and bounds over recent years.

IMO you can’t go far wrong with Varta or Yuasa. I stuck a Yuasa in our New Holland 12 yrs ago and it will still start it after sitting for weeks in winter.

Modern tractors have a high demand on the battery, well strictly speaking the alternator.
Have the charging system checked out to ensure the alternator is putting out what it should be.
Plus as others have said, disconnect the battery after use, reconnect when required & see if it starts ok, it could easily have a drain somewhere.
