As the title suggests , we had a suckler cow calve on sat morning , the calf cant stand and wont drink , I am currently bagging it 3 times a day ,
it seems ok but it cant stand by itself we lift it and hold it so its standing but after letting go it falls over , any thoughts about what might be wrong with the calf
and how long to bag it before accepting defeat baring in mind the cow would kill you if she could get near you .
Thanks

Worth a try?

Calf still thinks it’s in the uterus. Use the method detailed above

Thanks for the replies , not much change in the calf , i called the vet out and gave it a vitamin e injection plus a steroid .
We tried the technique with the rope but no change , to be fair its bright in its eyes etc but I think time is running out for a positive outcome.

Had same - did bloods on cows showed low iodine (and we bolused). I was nervous of BVD but did random samples and zero. Iodine issue is one that cant be put right after. We managed to get ours up. If your not supplementing with salt or pouring iodine on cows backs I would consider it. I did a lot of research as we also had issue with legs. We used to supplement with salt and seaweed meal and never that a problem until we didnt do it this year. Only affected a few calves it was random but one weak calf was so weak didnt make it. Another I wheel barrowed out every day just about to put it down when it stood up was just over a week. Vet also jab with a multi vit as I wanted to get vit B12 into it. Its fine now but not as strong as the rest.
