I'm very impressed with the bridge, it looks pretty bomb proof to me, I dunno how worried I would be about expansion, as long as you throw a few buckets of cold water from the river over it every half hour or so on the sunny days and perhaps light a fire under it during any winter cold spells I don't expect It'll expand or contract too much.

With @ColinV6 seriuosly impressive project about complete here is a bit more "bridge porn"

We had 2 stone arch bridges over our burn. Designed for horse & cart, both barely 10 ft wide & starting to take harm from the slurry tanker & silage trailers passing over.

It did not seem right to destroy the artistry of some stonemasons from circa 1850.
A few years ago with the help of my mate, Billy the bald builder we rebuilt the outside arches & walls giving 13 ft clear. A structural engineer gave us a spec for a reinforced concrete deck.
We ended up with from a distance looks very similar to how it had looked for 150 years but was robust enough to take modern kit
We were chuffed with the end result , --- pity the umbilical hose lads dribbled as they wrapped up today !

Well done - looking at that you'd never know anything had happened.

That’s a lovely job! Love how you’ve retained a totally original look. You wouldn’t even know it had been widened.

So it’s basically complete now! Gates on, boards off.
We haven’t had to run on the concrete yet either, due to a sketchy forecast we’ve postponed silage until next week.

Very smart

You mention silage trailers but do you graze on the fields either side of the bridge? If so I'd be tempted to use those gates elsewhere and put in sets of double gates with an up and over clasp as that looks ideal for a livestock catching / loading area

A grand job! It must have been tempting to just go down the easy replacement job rather than what you have done.

Thanks, we don’t generally graze the fields over the river. Used to winter some sheep but tend to get such mild winters now that there’s no real advantage to having the grass eaten off. We were always behind everyone else’s grass levels come spring.
