As for the Wessex carrying one it had to lose 204kg on a standard IIA. But by the time it entered service the Wessex payload had been further reduced, so it was never used transport them.

Have you been promised an early car?
They will have price lists with the options, to order from late next month. Deliveries won’t start much before Feb/March next year. Not in any significant numbers anyhow.

I doubt whether there will be a waiting list as such. Dealers believed that hype from LR before the launches of the Disco5 and Velar, so they stock ordered far too many for customers that were very slow to appear. Not many dealers will make the same mistake again, no matter how much pressure they are put under. Not with Brexit on the near horizon.

Interesting photos. The fist one is a prototype lightweight. The second photo is interesting as it looks like a very early Series 1 mounted with a 106mm recoilless gun probably from the Paras. Third is a series 2. In the fifties and early sixties the military were obsessed with the concept of air portability, hence things like the Mini Moke, Austin Ant, Austin Champ and even a 2CV pickup were all developed and extensively trialled. But by the time the LR Lightweight was brought into production the need for a special light vehicle had largely vanished.

My understanding is you can order at the motor show launch that starts on 12th September. So they should have price lists there.

Yes, the Frankfurt Motor Show. I will hopefully get to see at least one locally in the last two weeks of the month. Not been informed yet though. The price list should indeed be available from day one of the show.
No doubt the motoring magazines are being hosted right now to see and test production versions under embargo until launch day.
As is the way of these things, one magazine, probably Motor, will have had access to and trips with the company already and will have a special development and launch supplement ready for that week for the UK. JLR have done that kind of thing for major launches for decades. Other brands also.

Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe close to deal to build new 4x4 in a plant next to UK's Ford Bridgend factory
  • Talks with Ineos about building the car in Wales are 'very advanced'
  • The firm says car will be rugged, reliable and uncompromising 4x4 offroader
  • Ineos looking for a site capable of producing at least 25,000 cars a year

  • By WILLIAM TURVILL FOR THE MAIL ON SUNDAYPUBLISHED: 23:01, 17 August 2019 | UPDATED: 11:50, 18 August 2019

Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe is on the verge of striking a deal to make his new Land Rover Defender-style vehicle in South Wales, officials say.
The Mail on Sunday revealed in June that Ineos Automotive, the car-making arm of Ratcliffe's sprawling empire, was considering a deal to build a new 4x4 in a plant next to Ford's Bridgend factory which is due to close next year.
Now the Welsh Government says talks with Ineos about building the car in Wales are 'very advanced', raising hopes that hundreds of jobs could be created.

Ineos Automotive, which was set up to manage the 4x4 venture – dubbed 'Projekt Grenadier' – last week reported a €51 million (£46 million) loss for its first 11 months.

This was thanks to €41.4 million of research and development costs and administrative expenses of €8.8 million.
In its accounts, the firm said its new car would be a 'rugged, reliable and uncompromising 4x4 offroad vehicle'.

Isn't all the research and development of the the Grenadier being done in Germany and it's earmark unsurprisingly to have a lot of German components including a BMW engine. As much as I like the idea of a back to basics 4x4 utility, at £40k I am not sure where it's place in the market is. But hats off to Ratcliffe for giving it a go.

As far as I remember it is being engineered by a team from Mercedes but will have a BMW engine.

Ratcliffe is a multi-billionaire, so if it amuses him to dabble in this area of business, he is almost uniquely positioned within the UK to carry it out.
However he has very strong views about the UK Government's attitude to business and most of his money is made in mainland Europe and Germany in particular rather than the UK. His registered office and tax address also changes with the tax regimes of various countries and at the moment I think it is abroad again. Unless he has massive subsidies, I suspect he would build the vehicle abroad. I wouldn't be surprised if the Welsh Assembly threw massive dollops of money in his direction. They have done so to far less solid projects in the past.

Just a serious question

How big a world market is there for a rugged basic "van" type 4WD ?

Looking everywhere else in the world, it seems Utes ( ok, pick ups ) either with a rear tub or a flat tray back are king as work vehicles on farms, construction sites, in mines & utility companies

It seems that the "commercial" versions of Toyota Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero, Discovery etc are specced purely for the UK market, rather than an international one ?

Unless there is a huge market eg Toyota Hilux or Ford F100, it would be relegated to a "niche" market & priced accordingly ? Or not built at all ?

I'm a LR tragic from way back & certainly not a "hater", just wondering aloud about the economics of this . . .

With folks paranoid about their tools or dogs being nicked, I'd say there is a market for swb 3,5t van for towing from a range of trades here.

Yeah, I understand that, but surely there are already Transits, Ivecos, Toyotas etc etc that fill that role ?
Is there a big enough market for a "modern" SWB 4WD to justify tooling up for one ?
I would have thought if there was a gap in the market then Toyota or Ford would have already filled it ?
Anyway, I'm happy to be proved wrong

Not hard to bolt a locking canopy or tool boxes on the back of a ute :)
