New Defender

In hindsight I might have inadvertently been more insulting. I gave a friendly wave as I passed in the opposite direction in my P38. I think I ought to point out that it’s done nearly 250,000 miles, has peeling paint, several odd dents and a couple of bullet holes, so you can sort of understand why the look on the drivers face of the new defender looked as though I’d got out and punched him.

I had a drive in one, it’s a great discovery 4 replacement, far better than the terrible discovery 5 . It’s not a Defender at all though

The old defender has a good resale value because 99% have died from rustworm .

actually the old Defender has the record as the most environmentally friendly car ever produced as a huge % of produced cars are still running or are recycled for parts

you don’t see many double cab picks on the road 20,30,40,50 plus years old !

What do you not like about the discovery 5?
just done 600 mile in mine towing a couple of tons, very stable at motorway speeds big step up from my previous Volvo.
Recently drove a discovery 4 back from a job and didn’t think it was any better than a 5 and considerably less refined....just my opinion.

I like the Discovery5 as well. I would prefer is to the Defender on balance. The slight loss of departure angle is more than offset by the much bigger and more convenient access to the boot in the Discovery for me.

You see a lot more 90s hiluxs and landcruisers still doing actual hard graft than you do 90s defenders.
Yes the Defender is very much in decline and while during the early 1970's it was true that a very high proportion of LR's ever built were still in use, the same can't be true today. It is quite rare to see a pre-TDi Defender in use today and even TDi 200 and 300 are not really commonplace any longer. Classic Range Rovers are even becoming an endangered species as well as MkI Discovery. Most of the missing ones that used to be so common on the roads will have been scrapped. That's the reality rather than the romantic fiction.
On farms, the Defenders are already far outnumbered by far by one ton dual cab pickups.

Disco 5 nicer than new defender imo .
I wouldn't turn my nose up at either.
Except I already have, once The Disco5 for a Volvo XC90 [due to the dealer rather than the vehicle] and then cancelled an order for the Defender because I really didn't like it enough to get excited by it. I've yet to decide on an alternative and Covid has put it on the back-burner until next year when I know how Brexit will effect the farming industry.

Triggers Broom scenario. You could just about build a Series LR from pattern parts nowadays.

wondered where you got the p38 from? We had one in the yard that got used for ballistic testing!

It's crazy the mk 1 and 2 Discovery was just a Defender with a different body bolted on... yet they are worth nothing now. So many will have been scrapped when crossmembers needed replaced because even with a whole new chassis those Disco would only be worth ÂŁ3k at best. Yet the Defender was commanding anything upto ÂŁ9k for a 200 or 300tdi with new chassis (not sure if prices are still so high, that was when we sold our 90, 3 years ago)

As you say, they're disappearing. I don't know where all these old Defenders are that are supposedly still on the road
