Not aimed at the same demographic. Lots of pickups are being withdrawn from the European market, including the UK, but that is not because they are losing market share to Defender. It is because that most of the pickup/farm-utility towing market is in the UK and they don't sell anything like as well elsewhere in Europe. In other words the overall market is much smaller than most of us in the UK imagine. The market became saturated with pickups and so profits were very thin. Now that so many have or about to withdraw, prices of new pickups are rising dramatically. They are keeping the market short, from which farmers could do with learning from.

I heard yesterday that Hilux RRP had gone up by a 4 figure amount recently

And yet the dealers are not offering realistic values if you want to PX againt new... Something strange with the Market for sure, as I was looking at the Van Trader to get a jist of 2nd hand values for my PU to benchmark and take a couple of £k off the advertised prices as it has always provided a good base to reflect values, and when I approached a dealer for aquairing a replacement New vehicle, they offered me nearly £10k less than what the trade prices are advertising the trucks for on line and what I can see forecourt prices, even older ones than mine?

Neighbour has just sold his 17 plate ranger 3.2 manual. Average miles. He paid £14,000 as a trade sale a year ago when lockdown first started. He sold it for £20k cash... so eeven if he paid vat thats still £3,200 profit for basically driving it a year!

Anything with a toyota badge it seems. wish id ordered a new hilux at the start of the year.

Both still a bargain compared with a defender though, whether new or old.

I have an 18 plate L200. Be paid for in about 20 months. Will of done around 100k by then. Recon I'll get at least half it's value if I sell it private. Glad I bought it now. Bit like buying a vintage tractor. When you take away supply demand goes through the roof.

land rover has taken planned obsolescence to the next level. If you are a typical "keeping up with the jones" land rover/range rover owner, after a few years, you either you carry on constantly paying their extortionate parts prices, or you scrap the vehicle and buy another. they win either way. only lr owners would accept major gearbox/engine/drivetrain work as routine maintenance.
