as some of you will have seen last night in the price tracker thread.i posted some costings for black&white bullocks.basicly my bullocks are gaining 1.7kgs a day but the diet witch is maximum barley is costing £3 a day.so today iv been ringing round iv found bread at £130 a tonne and potatoes at £40 a tonne.
Both great feeds and not to bad a price for this year.
But can anyone recommend what to mix bread and potatoes with as iv no silage available.
Will 3 Kgs of straw 15kg potatoes and 10kgs of bread be ok.
I have a feeder wagon to mix with.
Help me please pm if you like
Thankyou

I would suggest if your b+ w cattle are doing 1.7 a day to not change anything. Fed " bread" for a while last year, never again, brought every crow to my yard, also it's basically junk food, and wrappers, at least what I got was

Barley would be better value than the potatoes at £ 40 not worth the hassle and risk

If they're doing that well and are within 3-4 months of slaughter I wouldnt change a thing as they'll just spend more time on farm adjusting to the new ration, could always sell a few as strong stores and keep the rest
They were bought as strong stores.i like fattening them just trying to lower the cost as it doesn’t stack up

[QUOTchoking hoof, post: 6047502, member: 11104"]5kg of potatoes = 1 kg of barley so if barley is less than £200/t it’s better value[/QUOTE]
Plus chokeing, scouring ,more straw needed, going rotten, stones in the machines and a lower ko /grade

3 parts barley to 1 part 24% blend ? that's what I use on bulls. Blend at £ 220 ish. You might not get 1.7kg a day average but they are well capable of reaching that or more but you might take bullocks to a bigger weight so the intake might be frightening. Even aiming for 550kg is dodgy at the moment, losing money every extra day you keep them just now.

I’ve seen your costings on the price tracker....
We have had finishers being fed 950kg of barley and 50kg of a 60% protein finishing blend (Beef 60) from DB Agriculture. If it wasn’t for a local mill making us a product similar we would still be feeding it. It is a great product for finishing and putting on fat, we could easily have extreme Holstein bulls at fat class 3.

Someone said they had barley delivered at £165, add the blend in and it will be fed at approx £185 before rolling and mixing.
Ring them up and they’ll most likely have someone near you feeding it if you’re unsure and go have a look at their cattle.

Bread is just a PITA- plastic, wrappers, bottle tops(!) and it goes mouldy very rapidly. I would not touch the damned stuff if it was me, not at £130 a tonne that is for damned sure.

Potatoes would be ok but there is a choking risk and bear in mind they contain a fair bit of water.

I'd stick with the barley provided the supply is good.

Harbro want £21.50/tonne to mobile mill and mix; that's their cheapest rate having 4+ tonne done. It doesn't get any cheaper even having 10 or 15 tonnes done at a time. We have them to do the sheep mix as its quick and easy and not having huge amounts done so happy to pay the premium when we're busy. Local man to me has a tractor drawn machine and does it for £10/hour but that's straight rolling and then needs mixing in the diet feeder. Ideal for the cattle.

They're charging me £26.50/t for 5t at a time and have put everyone around here on a minimum of £130 to come and mill.

I use them , some like having their own mill , but you can use so many more options with the mobile plus their labour and power

Db agriculture 60% protein concentrate is the best concentrate you can buy. 75% barley 25% wheat dB concentrate, I know they are dear but a few chopped washed potatoes mixed in to add a bit of moisture/starch plus added palatability, add lib wheat straw. Rocket fuel mix for b/w steers. Can’t feed cheap if you want results
I'm very very impressed with it. It seems to make a massive difference to the poorer dooers in a pen of bulls. Iv only been using it 6 weeks but there is eyesight in the difference in my bulls. Iv tried every concoction before. I'm see what they are like when they kill out obviously.
