New driver insurance

My daughter starts driving next month and we are currently looking at the best way to insure a car for her. Looking at a 1.2 Polo or Fiat 500. NFU Mutual are looking at it for me but they don’t seem very keen to do it, I may be wrong and get a pleasant surprise next week! The reality is that I will be paying for her insurance and will probably continue doing so for years. Who have you used for young driver insurance?

Use the comparison websites, she prob will need a black box fitted.

Compare quotes with her as main driver only and with you and your wife on the policy as well.

Aviva, Hastings for mine but you have to shop around. Cheaper with a black box but mine didn’t want one
Shop around every year as it does change
My oldest is now 21 and even after a claim the premium has plummeted

Got a quote off Adrian Flux for a Suzuki Jimny for my lad as his first car . quote was £2000 so Went ahead and brought the car ready for him passing his test . Soon as he passed I rang them to go ahead with the policy i was told the quote was Only valid for 30 days and we were 3 days over so had to re quote . Now they want £6500 !!!!
Youngest boy had a 1.6 petrol Golf as first car @ £3000 year to insure , lost licence for 9 months for DD and now has a 1.9 TDI Golf and insurance is now £1630 . I think they just pic a number and see what they can get away with .

Look at different vehicles as well.

Statistically alot of little 1.2 litre cars are crashed by 17 year olds ........... as that's what they drive......... so the premiums are high. So a bigger engined car may be cheaper.

I ended up with nfu with both my kids, 20 and 22 now. Not the cheapest but a long way from the most expensive, no black box at the time and in their name so no claims could build. Definitely under 1000 cc to start though.

Put yourself and your wife on as named drivers on son/daughters car and get realistic quote.

+1 - reduces the premium as any time named drivers are driving (assuming no claims etc) reduces the risk.

Remember the premium will go up when they pass their test. You need to tell them if kids passes as it a material change to the policy. I got a congratulations - give us another £100 from Admiral - Although the original £900 no black box came down to £600 on first renewal . 1.2l Polo - 2007model.
