Hi All.

If you were going to protentional have the opportunity to start a fresh with a new yard How would you start to design it.

Mixed arable and livestock farm.

Will need to have livestock buildings for cattle of 4 different ages, grain stores, machinery shed, work shop, fert store, straw storage, FYM storage (up to 14days only). fuel store etc.

Would you get in a consultant (if yes who) or ?

cheers

yes agree about separate sheds for age groups all with clear air flow, not as at present, where sheds are linked portal frames so air can move through the sheds from one group to the next.

We did this 10 years ago................. First thing get an electric supply and triple what you may use, upgrading is dear. Then layout for security and enough space for lorries etc. Where are you based ?

Wiltshire. Luckily the site has a 11,000 V step down transformer on the road frontage so electric is not going to be a problem. My thought was to have track around outside of the site so lorries can drive in and drive out with out turning and chewing up surface.

We have built one similar to that, just ,making sure you have enough swing out room. More than happy to look at it and price something up if its of interest.

Boggy.
Lots of concrete and galvanised steel.:love::love::love:
Whats not to like?

Take your time to think about it, work out how it "flows", make a model on a sheet of ply if needed.
I spend hours every day traipsing from one shed to another, and back agian, complete PITA.:banghead:
Courtyard shape with one way in and one way out with cctv on it, with a heavy gate and a big padlock.

Clean end at top of the slope, running down to muck store at bottom end.
Sheds aligned for clean air blowing through each shed and age group.
If site is exposed then make a sheltered central area within the site.

Plan for double the number of stock and storage, don't be stuck up against a footpath or stream in 3 sheds / 10 years time.

Have smells blowing away from the house(s). Have the house overlooking the drive but not have the main drive coming right up to the house.
Electric gates are ace.

Visit as many similar sites as possible, ask owners what they would (or not) do again.

Don't restrict your sheds design to farming, next generation might want industrial units or caravan storage?

Get as big a site as possible leveled and double it and then get massive clean water piping done before building.
Look at as many other setups as you can as there's good and bad in all.
Design stock handling, and loading with safety in mind as we all get older and string tied gates are very dangerous to both humans and cattle

As Paul E says, draw a basic plan, then put in "desire lines" showing what has to be moved from where to there. Keep these short -- and adaptable.

Calculate what sizes are needed for various functions, make cards to represent these in proportion to your plan and move them around to get the best flow.

But design from the bottom up, so your first consideration is drainage (rainwater and slurry). It's quite difficult to move drainage water up hill!

When you've done that, maybe time to talk to a professional.

Cad design will be your friend. It can show you what works and doesn’t. Even 3D model it so it shows you available turning space and best lay outs for minimal movements. Design it well now and benefit from that in the future.

we have worked on similar projects with a good consultant and would be happy to discuss if you wish.
Please email [email protected] if this helps?

The consultant was/is independent and has decent experience in this area with no tie to us. The client we produced all the buildings for engaged his services direct and controlled contractors as he wished
....Not sure why this should be a problem if you want end up with a layout that works based on experience gained elsewhere?
