New Grain store. Pedestals or Underfloor system.

I am building a new grain store. It will be 80x40 and split with a walls so basically 20x80.
I will be loading in and out with tractor and loader or tipping with trailers.
I really like the lishman and Evan’s and Pearce underfloor systems but will I be able load in and out with the pedestals without damaging them? Why I like Evan’s and Pearce as you can get the poly cool ones.
would I be better with standard ones so they can be moved easier.
Or the other option is laterals down each side a fry feet from the wall. But are the fans for these much bigger/more expensive than the pedestal type ones?

Which I’d seen those underfloor lishmann at the time, save trying to climb all over the heap to pedestal fans.
I’ve an 80x50 with free standing dividing wall and wanted underfloor duct / grille into the concrete running sideways but costs just got prohibitive.
ps will a 20’ wide bay be quite tight/narrow to tip side-side? I also lose a fair bit with having a central end door (just my two-penneth)

for cooling grain
run a length of 300mm twin wall pipe down the middle of each side
leave a hole in the end of the shed to put pipe through and put a fan on outside
cover pipe first if tipping trailers to stop pipe moving then just tip a trailer load at either side
twin wall stands a fair knock or scrape
thats what I use on 7 grain stores

I think, like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If space allows you would be better going 70x50 with a central air tunnel and wooden floors, but it will cost, and you will need a big electrical connection. You could then dry grain as well as cool it.
When I first came here, I was shown what was called the Grainstore. I said that this isn’t a Grainstore, but a shed that we store the grain in. Because there was no drying or cooling facilities at all. Not even any electricity to it!
I got round it by putting a central corrugated 750 mm plastic pipe down the middle of each side with slits in it made by a chainsaw and laying a role of hessian over the top, with a Lister MEU fan behind the shed.

This cools the grain and will dry 1 to maybe 2% out of it if you are lucky!
But I so wish they had done the job properly with a Challow type proper grain drying floor.
I have used pedestals back at the main farm yard. But I hate them!

I really like the idea of fan at outside of the shed so no climbing over grain and preferable no extractor.
For ventelation do you put in a Louvre or just space the tin on gable like on cattle shed? Or will this let in too much moisture?
I will have the door in one side as sheds being built into a bank and this works best.
with the laterals how do you work if the sheds only half full? Just cover up pipe at end or not put in as much pipe?

also how much are the fans for the laterals? Are they much heavier on juice?
Drying floor is just a dream. £2-3k investment vs I guess £60k? I’ll only have 80-100 acres so bit ott but admit it would be nice.

In shed with temp storage/pedestals I just made the infill between the concrete panel and outside cladding down 1 side out of old A-shape laterals cut down. It’s good actually and keeps air moving
In another shed it’s got a vent panel in the gable / proper spillboards but it rattles and whistles

If you want to keep it cheap...

Just get some second hand pedestals off @grainboy. Put the pedestals in the middle of each bay and tip in front of the pedestal and use a grain pusher to get around the pedestals.

For a shed that size 6 pedestals may be all you need - doesn't really matter whether metal or plastic. You can get 1.1kw grain fans for £350. Get someone to make you a grain pusher and you shouldn't hit the pedestals

We have. Under floor ventilation in one she'd we used 9 inch brown waste pipe and just teed off where needed with four inch just using four inch brown again cheep and cheerful about two thirds the height of the heap tip the grain in at about 25 to 30 'c and put the fans on. 40 x80 with the grain about 15 foot nothing has spoilt. Find this better than the pedestals because it takes any warm damp air outside. Just wish we had gone whole hog and put a suspended floor in

Thats a great idea for ventilation I thought perforated sheets or just space the tin with a fingers width as I’ve done before on cattle sheds would do, but afraid of moisture getting in on a damp day.
lovely sheds to btw

I did try to quote people and reply individually but doesn’t seem to work.
Thanks for all the reply’s.
I’ll message grainboy see what he has. I do like cheap!! But still want a decent set up that’s not a chore every year.

Thanks for the pictures Quattro. I don’t think it’ll work for my system as the back wall were you need fans is all back filled up about 7-8 ft. I think I will go for the underfloor type with poly cool laterals
