New grain store

Looking at putting up a new grain store this coming year around the 100' x 60' size, nice and easy 5x 20ft bays but then I got thinking about other stores I've seen and a lot of people have gone 7x 15ft bays for 105ft. Is this a cheaper option? Stronger? At 20ft bays in a grain store would I need to go for steel purlins?

Any thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated

Edit. Who's nicked the 'e' from my store in the title [emoji24]

When Colley built ours Rob he said that the 20 is cheaper. You want steel purlins anyways and there will be less panels so less gaps to fill. If there's any chance that it will be extended in the future then get the holes drilled before it is put up. And height is cheap!

Id go as high as the planners let you, they made us shrink our shed down a bit, can tip a 14 tonnes trailer easily enough but not a hgv.
Not that I do but who knows?
How tall did you apply for/ end up being allowed to build? Even though I'm on top of the hill there aren't many places that look out on to the farm so hopefully they won't be too arsey with me. Will 22ft eaves tip an artic?

I didn't say *need*, I just think steel are better in a grain store. We have timber in our newer cattle sheds but they are a bit saggy...zeds should be quicker as well?

sorry when you said he wants steel purlins I thought that meant he had to have them :) my bad

Timbers faster, zeds are a right pain 3 times as many bolts to do up to start with

Surely zeds are lighter and you can do 40's?

40 footers are a pain in the arse, they're proper wanky and flappy and you have to lift them on with a crane because it's impossible to jiggle them between rafters, and once you've got the purlin up you've the same number of bolts to do up. It isn't putting purlins that takes time it's doing the bolts

I'd rather do timber purlins every day of the week. Steel look better granted but I'd rather out timber up
