New grain store

A local guy built a grain store this summer and did it on 28 day notice, he bought a kit and got it erected by some lads ,it must be 3ft to high as its back in planning for a full application re the height and it has to be full planing as the building is already up ,about 6 years ago one had to be reduced in height about 3ft ,the ironic thing is we were erecting one about 200 yds away at the same height he started with

I believe It's 12m on permitted development unless you live within 3km of any airfield then it's 3m

So it must have been a helluva building :)

yes i am aware of the 12m ,but the point is when you have submitted your drawing and put the dimensions on the forms that is what you are permitted to build the LPA may have taken a different view if it was proposed higher as it is on the top of a hill. Now they are on the case the application has to be a full planning application with design and access statement and everything that goes with it and cost a lot more money

Ah i see what u mean, we are within 3km of a grass strip airfield so permitted development no use due to the daft height limit.

Why is the height so limited near an airfield, at 12m they would be about to crash a plane anyway, and that is restricted to 500 ft minimum unless during take off or landing?

It's not the planes it's the radar. They *really* don't like wind turbines either.

our local airfield has no radar though.

Same here ours is a grass strip, when i had the planners out after getting my permitted development rejected because of it.I did say if they are 3m off the floor, they would have gone through a wind break of trees, through the cattle shed (which is about 7m to ridge and been there 20 years) and be in the kitchen :) so the new grain store would be the least of the issues. They did say it was daft but it was set nationally. Even 12m and 8 m near an airfield would have been usable. As it is you can barely build a hen house.

My understanding is if an airfield appears on here http://www.skydemonlight.com/ (even the tiny green ones) its declared on the digital maps the planners use now and comes under planning conditions for consideration. I have heard of a few people get rejected now where as in the past no one would have even known one of these airfield were there

severn trent water spent£800k on two big turbines in Derby about 3 years ago they have never been used apparently they interfere with the radar at east midlands airport, never mind just put a few quid on everyones water bill

When they were flush, planners were not so bothered about airports. Now they will run the PD applictaion through the grinder to see if it ticks any box for them to get a fee.

Hi good evening.
On the whole 20' bays work out cheaper than 15' bays as there is less steelwork involved, admitadly you need bigger purlins for the 20' bays but there is no comparrison in costs between the two. Also you will more than likely save on your groundwork costs as there are less foundations holes to consider even though foundations will be slightly bigger for the 20' bays.
I would recommend having steel purlins on the 20' bays also as these are better and stronger than timber purlins and also come complete with an anti-sag system. On the positive zed purlins work out cheaper than timbers on 20' bays and are a better product. Please be careful with this as alot of companies will charge a premium rate for the zed purlins over timber when you should be getting a reduction in cost.
Only real positive with the 15' bays is you will more than likely reduce your rail size to a lighter section if zed rails and helps to spread the loadings against you panels. But with CE marked panels and a properly designed shed a 20' bay will be no issues.
If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.
