Wait a minute. I thought the rule always was that you let pedestrians cross before turning into a junction. I always do especially if there is some annoying racer on my tail.šŸ‘
You wouldn't go booling around a corner with a pedestrian on the kerb without first making sure they weren't going to step straight out as they are only focused on their phone.

Yesterday I tried out the new guidelines behind a cyclist on a single track road and after being forced to cycle for 400m up a fairly steep hill he tried to wave me on 40m before a blind to me corner. I remained where I was behind him and he had to grind like heck before having to stop in a passing place to let me by. I don't think he was as happy as if I'd just passed him with two wheels on the verge doing 20 as I would usually do.
However these rules pale into insignificance as a problem for rural folk when you consider a dozen activists on bikes in a city center can now bring it to gridlock by exercising their 'rights'.

If you can keep up with a bike in a busy city c your a good man , with busses and taxies stopping everywhere,

The worse aspect of this is giving pedestrians right of way at junctions. Whoever thought that one up should pay for all the rear end shunts and the medical costs of all the pedestrians that will be mowed down exercising what they will believe to be their right.
Jaywalkers that cross the road anywhere but on a designated pedestrian crossing in America are jailed. I wouldnā€™t go that far, but why meddle with a system that currently works well in the UK and has done for probably nearly a century.
Same goes for bikes, whose riders, by the way, Iā€™ve witnessed over the years to be the most arrogant, ignorant and nasty types that totally ignore all rules of the road while having the privilege of not being forced to pay for third party insurance or road tax.
The only way that might anywhere near work is to have a mandatory speed limit of sub 20mph in all towns, residential areas, industrial estates and any where else where people might be walking.
It could well be chaos with in a short space of time with legal fees being scooped up by the legal system.

My 1977 edition of the Highway Code clearly states you should give way to pedestrians when turning into junctions so whatā€™s changed. It also makes reference to cyclists on the inside.
Whatā€™s changed?
Sorry itā€™s upside down.
what has changed is that you now have to guess whether they are wanting to cross or not and stop in anticipation rather than just not mow idiots that cross in unsuitable places down as they cross. This could mean gridlock in most towns with people choosing to cross at junctions rather than safely away from junctions.

Cyclists and pedestrians should pass the same Highway Code and road craft ā€˜driving testā€™ as car drivers in my opinion and cyclists should also have compulsory third party insurance and have their cycling licenses endorsed and penalties applied at the same rate as for drivers when they break the rules. The fact that cyclists are given a free-for-all pass for going through red traffic lights is absolutely disgusting.

I have read nothing about being able to go through a red light , can you show documents,
As for junctions , bikes are no different to cars , if he's indicating left he's going left , more and more town trafic lights have a priority light for bikes now anyway to get them out of the way
I think car drivers are imagining difficulty as to stir up more argument
Something I have no interest in. I hate road rudeness from anyone , whatever they drive or ride.
Your comment about pedestrian s is ridiculous, first thing your told when your learning to drive , look out for pedestrian s, would you fly around a junction when you can see them standing on the kerb

Got to laugh at those who do things because it's their right.
We have the right to cross at a pedestrian or zebra crossing, but it's worth having a look for cars coming, because if a car hits you, "your right" won't stop it from hurting.
Pedestrians don't have "right of way" at zebra crossings - the code says they should not step onto one until the traffic has stopped.
It will be used as a charter for more road rage IMO

One thing that should be enforced is the requirement to fit AND use a bell to all bikes
The law doesn't require that a bell be fitted or to be used, so that can't be enforced. Although I do think that the law ought to be changed to requiring them & not just the basic "ding", but something akin to the old rotary type to create a multi-stage sound rather than something that sounds like a text message on a twitPhone.

Cars must give way when someone is on the crossing, that suggests that the pedestrian has the right to be there.

The picture I saw on the Conservative Facebook page showed cyclists being encouraged to hold center lane 'to increase their road presence and thus safety'. If a dozen slow moving cyclists on a dozen roads elect to do this along with a dozen activist pedestrians rotating around four corners at a junction exercise their right over vehicles they could bring a city center to gridlock and the incidence of road rage would go through the roof.
Surely with rights comes responsibilities. Spatial awareness including hearing should be a required responsibility. Earphones should be gone and mirrors should be needed. Cyclists should, like vehicle owners, live with the fear of a 'without due care and attention' charge, the subsequent fines and penalties.
