New Holland LM handler

Just asking here as its Sunday and dealer is obviously shut. Was pushing up linseed straw to burn yesterday afternoon when suddenly machine died and stopped. Fuel gauge does not work but I write down on a pad the hours when I refuel and normally top up every 10/12 hrs. Because of the work , I ve been running machine pretty flat out and see that I ve done 10 hrs since refill so assumed I ve run out of fuel.(normal life is pottering around so low fuel use)
Anyhow, this morning I ve taken out fuel, hand primed up to filter and got resistance ( as it says in book)and then cranked over engine(its self priming electric fuel pump)but not getting any smoke or obviously starting. It's there a way of telling if the electric pump is ok or not, I ve never heard it running ever.
What I m saying is, if no smoke then no diesel getting through. Could be blocked filter or is the electric pump wrong? Haven't got a new filter but may see if old filter from a few months ago is still around and try ? Just asking but will phone dealer tomorrow but would be nice to get her running today for various reasons.

Well I ve had another go but still no further on. I can blow back down suction pipe to tank and excess fuel pipe back to tank. Took filter off, looks clean as a whistle. Hand prime pump works, refitted and filled filter. With excess fuel pipe off and ignition on, no fuel coming out injector pump so does that mean the electric pump is wrong? Still no smoke hence no diesel getting through .

Fine one second, then just died and stopped in a few seconds. The real pain was that I was on my last push as my wife had just phoned to say we were out for supper and so I had better come back to have a shower !! Two minutes later and I would have been home and parked by diesel tank !!
I ve put 70 ltrs in tank from my bowser but will top up when I get it going to see how much I get in, according to book it has 120 ltr tank( I think),. so at moment not 100% if I have actually run out or if the electric pump has failed. Not sure if relevant but it's an 09 reg LM 5040, 3850 hrs and fuel filter was changed approx 100 hrs ago but all fuel comes out main tank via big water trap/filter and has a fuel additive .
The main thing I don t know is whether the electric pump runs for say 10 seconds when you turn on ignition or constant and would it send diesel back to the excess fuel line because at moment it does not.

I have a NH tractor that the pump runs for 20 secs then stops, not sure what it does when its started as I cannot hear it then obviously. (switching the key on and off a few times will bleed it when changing filters, after loosening the bleed screw)

Fill it to the brim with fuel as that may add more pressure depending on heights (makes the world of difference on a 40 series tractor)
Do you you have it leaving the filters at full flow rate when the bleed nut or pipe is loosened?... if there are any bubbles keep pumping

dont think a LM5040 had an electric pump from factory? its an old NEF iveco engine i think?
Manual lift pump driven off the cam shaft, replaced quite a few of them, cheap from Iveco, expensive from CNH or anyone else.

The often get a bit of crap stuck in them under the valves, you might try taking it off and blowing in it with air line to dislodge any crap in it.

Also last week i had the wire break off inside the injector pump loom.

You have a single power feed to a multi plug at the injector pump, in that injector pump loom the power feed splits in to 2, one goes straight to the fuel run solenoid the other goes to the temp sender on the side of the engine block and then comes back to the timing advance solenoid on the side of the injector pump.

Just an update as it may help someone else in future. Although my book says different ,@ACEngineering was right, my machine does not have electric prime pump !! Advice this morning from dealer mechanic was to check electric stop valve ( as suggested by @Lincsman ) but did not know how but left ignition on and took wire off and when back in contact could hear a click( also checked I had 12v to stop valve). Also took it out to check spring in base was not broke by rubber boot.
Again not in book, but when hand priming up , needs ignition on !!
Was also advised to crack off 3 injector pipes not just the one and use a wiff of easy start as they are known to be bu..ers to restart from empty system.
Anyhow battery was very weak so removed and recharged in workshop for 4 hours and just went out and she is running again !!
Apart from my time and the hassle, ended up not costing anything and I ve learnt some stuff.
Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.
