Currently looking to buy a S/H round baler for use on straw only. Has anyone had any experience using the New Holland for this purpose. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I’ve used 4 RB150 balers of various spec from launch in about 2014 up until 2017.

They weren’t New Holland’s finest hour, and glad we made the change to a McHale

The net wrap system was a backwards step compared to the earlier designs, net storage was very badly designed and the pickup reel and rotor was a poor design that had been modified and better modified to try and improve things rather than accepting it was crap and starting with a clean sheet of paper design.

Output wise the McHale is worth an extra gear higher in the field in all conditions and although not perfect is light years ahead of the NH in terms of output and long term robustness.

oh if anyone in a moment of madness does decide to buy one make sure the dealer replaces the stupid castor wheels on the pickup reel with the fixed wheels.

the castors are a ridiculous design where you can’t reverse with the pickup down.

the designers of that baler quite clearly never got one given to use or listened to a word any of the testers said.

Thank you Drillman for the comments. I have been offered a McHale F540 fixed chamber roller baler privately, however with it being a roller type I was concerned it wouldn't be very good if the straw became brittle?

McHale are a very good baler however I know nothing about roller balers as my experience is limited to various brands of belt balers over the last 30 years.

I would avoid a roller baler for straw. I had an f550 for a year, to my mind I could never see what everyone gets so excited about. Its build quality showed no finesse, after 1 season I replaced it with a belt baler. I would look at Kuhn ( only because I am very pleased with my new one) or a Welgar/Massey/Fendt.
