Clive would it be possible for this thread to be moderated into 2 threads
1 with direct questions to defra ( Janet and the team ) and the answers
and 1 for all the other replies
having one big thread make it hard to refer back to defra answers

any One new to this thread has to wade through a lot of general replies to get to the specific answers

OK we have done this now in the resource section to try separate he questions and answers from the general chat - we will update it as new questions and answers are added to this thread

a resource worth bookmarking IMO

Morning all, (edited to include links)

I'm sorry not to have been here for a while.

Today we've published some information about what we'll be paying for in the Sustainable Farming Incentive this year, and everything else we'll be paying for through Environmental Land Management schemes.

Here is the full document: https://gov.uk/government/publications/environmental-land-management-update-how-government-will-pay-for-land-based-environment-and-climate-goods-and-services…

News release here: https://gov.uk/government/news/therese-coffey-farmers-central-to-food-production-and-environmental-action…

Blogpost here: https://defrafarming.blog.gov.uk/2023/01/26/environmental-land-management-schemes-details-of-actions-and-payments/

I hope you'll see that we've carefully taken on board a lot of your feedback to make SFI simpler, more flexible and more workable for you, and to make sure we've offering payments for the whole range of farm types, sizes and locations.

Looking forward to hearing what you think and answering your questions :)

Morning all,

I'm sorry not to have been here for a while. Later today we'll be publishing some information about what we'll be paying for in the Sustainable Farming Incentive this year, and everything else we'll be paying for through Environmental Land Management schemes.

I'll share the information here as soon as the links are live (we'll publish them as soon as the Minister has spoken in the House of Commons later this morning - we're not allowed to publish them before that), and be here to answer questions as they come.

Looking forward to hearing what you think and answering your questions :)
Been offered a 5 year extension to HLS can you confirm that I can come out of HLS and go into Elms if Elms looks better

200 acre PP farm. Nothing exciting such as peat/ floodplain/whatever. Just 200 acres of grass. What does it get ?
I doubt there will be an answer because it doesn’t appear that DEFRA actually work through the options available to particular types of farms.
If there is an answer that is not immediately obvious to me having read some of the above link then no doubt @Janet Hughes Defra will provide it from work already done. No sign of the threshold I require to make it worthwhile putting up with the bureaucracy. Still out.

Depends what you want to do - there are 280 options in the prospectus, there are plenty that would be relevant to grass. In SFI in 2023, there are payments for actions to improve biodiversity, nutrient management, water quality and climate emissions, both on improved grassland and low input grassland (and anyone transitioning from improved to low input). There are also payments for nutrient management, adding or maintaining legumes like clover in improved grassland, pest management and hedgerows. And there is a full CS offer alongside that.

£45/ha for not using insecticides. Bit of a postcode payment as the South West and West is a hotbed of aphids compared to other parts of the UK.
There are 19 new actions in SFI in 2023 - you can choose the combination of actions that works for your farm, and how much of your land to enter into each action. Several of the actions can be rotated each year as well. So hopefully there is plenty of flexibility there for you to be able to find a combination of things that will work for you.

@Janet Hughes Defra A worked example of what DEFRA see as the maximum return available with the flexibility of a blank page shouldn't be difficult to provide unless of course no one in DEFRA has actually looked beyond the process.
