As a subscriber to the FG, I recently received an email about a new wormer, just come on the market. I think it's a drench... Zolvix. Apparently very good and kills even resistant worms, worms resistant to other wormers. Thoughts?

Our local indi merchant is stocking it now but it's the same price as the vets. He reckons he doesn't have much margin to play with. Last time I asked at Wynnstay and CCF they hadn't had any in but it was showing on their system at the same price too. Anyone found a better price? It's around £390 for 2.5l around here...

Same price for me. I don't think it's a bad thing though, might stop people chucking it around needlessly.

Well yes there is that. I was just expecting to buy it a bit cheaper through the merchants. We know we have resistance to the other groups so we're using zolvix once a year at weaning as a clear out drench. White drench still works well for nemo thankfully.

As I posted on the other thread, I got a litre from Wynnstays the other day for £158. They didn't have 2.5L on the shelf and I didn't ask a price, not that I wanted that much anyway.

Are your vets not competitive on normal drench prices?
I source more or less all mine from our vets - they're generally as cheap as anywhere.
Think it's Elanco keeping the price up to recoup their development costs, and prevent over use of course:rolleyes:

Is the amount to use on your lambs same as white drench or is it more potent? How often in a year should this particular dose be used?

Different white drenches have different dose rates, so it's not that easy. Zolvix dose rate is 1ml/10kg.

I would suggest that, other than as a quarantine dose for bought in sheep, Zolvix shouldn't be used at all, unless you have resistant worms. Your first course of action is to discover whether you have resistance to each wormer group through FEC testing. If you've only used white in the past, then you might well find you can get as good a response from yellow or clear drench, as you would from the vastly more expensive Zolvix.

Without testing, you are just shooting blind. If you use Zolvix as a routine drench, it won't be long before you have worms resistant to that too.

For example end of year? What is it like for pregnant ewes? Can it be used at tupping time or prior to or after lambing?

Healthy ewes don't need worming at tupping. Unless you have heamonchus (unlikely in West Wales?), the only time to consider worming ewes is at lambing. Some would suggest not even then.

Again, unless you have worms resistant to every other group, don't use Zolvix for that.

NO definitely not to be used on ewes other than brought in ewes to the flock. Ewes are generally resistant to worms and zolvic and startec should be kept to use on lambs in case of resistance issues to the other wormers. Incorrect use will only quicken the onset of resistance to the only drugs that are currently effective.

Thanks for that :) new to flock management, so just wanted to tap your knowledge a bit ;) there are so many choices of wormer on the market these days can be quite a difficult decision to make. We use Albex white drench (I think it is) sometimes dectomax, if needed ofc for terms of wool coming off and scratching repeatedly, not often that happens.
