Our old converted pig weigh is givin erratic weights, so wa ting to convert to a new one.

Needs to be digital and weigh properly 🤣
Will shed lambs into it from the race, so doesn't need to shed.

Don't need tag reader or Bluetooth, will possibly be moved once or twice a year, from one holding to the other.

What's good?
What's to avoid?

None of its cheap anymore .
something like this https://www.tannertrading.co.uk/sheep-weighing/ritchie-tru-test-digital-lamb-weigher/ but best to phone them to check if one savailiable. then add this https://www.tannertrading.co.uk/liv...-load-bars/tru-test-s3-weigh-scale-indicator/
weighhead.

or an iAE one is good imo and again dont use the scales it comes with but add a weigh cell like above and a trutest or gallagher base model weigh head still adds up to about 1200 or so time youve done it
can get weigher with ordinary scales for abpot 675 i think https://iae.co.uk/product-agriculture/mechanical-lamb-weigher/

btw if anyone wants the spring balance scales from one unused in new box ive got one for sale .:)

trouble is its all gone up recently.

Yeah I’m looking as well. I’m thinking prattley 3 way manual draft. Looks nice and portable but waiting on a new round of grants ideally. Would love a auto draft but seem silly money

The Border Software one is extremely similar I think but a lot less money

I like allied weighing. I’ve dealt with them for weigh bars under a combi clamp but had some issues with the weigh head connection a couple times over the last 5 years. There aluminium cattle platform is top notch though and works a treat. Been very impressed.
I’ll look at the border software crate for sheep but do like tHe look of prattley one

I've used their conversation on my current crate, it's the crate itself that's letting me down, I've emailed them about their crate, but no reply 😅

Just put a grant application in and have listed Bateman as preferred option.
https://lmbateman.co.uk/product/lamb-weighers/
I think Bateman have a march on IAE on build quality, though tbf both Staffs made so wont go far wrong with either.
I saw one the other day I think with a lift up back, either that one or IAE one, you wouldn’t fit ewes or rams in it. Personally if your doing a lot of it then a Prattley/Border Software weigh crate is the weigh to go.

@TexelBen won’t need a big, wide crate now that he’s heading down the shedding route…..

I’ve an IAE electronic ‘pig weigher’ that must be twenty years old. Apart from having to rebuild and reinforce the front gate where lambs smashed it, and the linkage bar that operates it, and replacing the electronic weigh cells once, and finally replace those electronics with a new kit from Pharmweigh (which has been faultless)….. it’s been great.

Yeah, avoid IAE, at least until they’ve learnt to weld properly.

IAE crate is actually Good. well needs a bit of noise deadening somehow maybe but tin based ones are like that its like a loud speaker when the gates are shut.
there's an excellent non slip floor .
Nothing at all wrong with the welding, very well galvanised and easy to move around.
s3 scale grabs weights very well and is easy to calibrate to all sorts of cells using the datalink app.

Looks more enviro/conservation based grant by the looks of it? We do have a load of old stone barns that need reroofing

My only advice would be that (in our AONB anyway) it's a three year scheme, 2021-22 is year 1, and they have only just launched it, so if you have a project in mind there may be a need to allocate funds in the next 5 months.

All the IAE stuff I’ve had in recent years has indeed been well galvanised. Unfortunately that galvanising has been all that’s held it together in places, which only becomes evident when the ‘welds’ start breaking up.

Christ if all they are is a digital weigh cell and a screen surely you can fit them to any old scale?

i will investigate for mine never realised it was so simple!

with respect to the above pic that looks like something i will make to fit on my scales, its just d link and some bits of metal welded up to fit the electronic weigh cell and screen to a std lamb weigh?

What will be interesting to see over the years is how all the fancy current Ally gear stands up to the rigours of the job, big difference being the initial cost of the unit i guess.
Unfortunately from what i read some of it also doesn't function very well either.
our other one is based on an old poldenvale pig weigher converted on weigh bars, non galv. and not quite as much blue paint nowadays, but still basically sound ,iirc i bought it 'quite' secondhand in 1986
