Went to the local showing of the new combines. Very nice but my god are they actually going to sell a single one for next harvest. £500,000 for the big one after discount according to the chap that showed us around one. Will anybody risk that purchase in present financial conditions.

They will sell loads, it wasn't many years ago when people couldn't believe they were £250,000.

I'm about to cut my little patch with a combine I bought for £500.

Won’t be too long before they are at 7 figures. Don’t laugh! This may well happen down the road. In the meantime many will be leased or contract hired, but rates will of course reflect initial value and vitally residual value. Who’s going to buy a 4/5 year old one @ £250K plus?

It’s crazy our 13 plate on 2000 hours is still insured for £190k with header. It’s frightening as who would buy that!

A man after my own heart, mine cost 700. A local cotractor told me years ago that he built his house for 2500, and had 25 years to pay it off. the same year he bought a new Allis Gleaner for 2800, and only had 3 years to pay it. This would have been twenty years later and he said A new combine still costs more than a new house, I suppose he's still right.

So you think half a million pounds for a machine that works for 2 weeks a year is reasonable? Even if wheat was £200/T it’s still a joke....you could buy a decent house for that

If wheat had kept up with inflation. It would be closer £500/t in which case the combine would look cheap yes

A lexion 8900 is probably a LOT more complex than a house !

I would say the house is too expensive !

At what point though is x2 770 /780 type machine and considerable change not a far better option ?

The new 8900 is mighty I’m sure but it’s not going to get close to x2 780’s so even allowing for age factoring in some extra downtime where is the case for a single £500k machine ?

I suspect the finance would be the stumbling block for most in that situation.

Getting half a million quid for a new Lexion 8900 is going to be relatively straightforward assuming your credit report isn't a horror story.

Getting £400k for a pair of mid-life 780s is a much bigger hurdle, even for those with a clear credit history. It's just a much bigger risk for a lender, as the resale market if the borrower defaults is going to be limited.

If you have the cash or a suitable line of credit then it seems like a no-brainer to me, but the same is true of most "big ticket" equipment purchases, regardless of the industry - it's almost always cheaper to let someone else take the depreciation hit and then buy it while it still has plenty of reliability in reserve.
