Machinery prices are an absolute joke

Agree.
Not much of it getting sold at the moment though.
Had a disheartened rep in the other day contemplating a career change.
Only pricing three things at the moment. All huge machines such as combine, self propelled sprayer, Combi wrapper Baler.
No enquiries whatsoever from what you may call your average farmer for bread and butter type sales.

Less enquiries about used kit too i’m sure.

Looking back over the last 10 yrs my gross margins improve a lot, nett margins even more so

This despite being a user of new combines, tractors and drills etc over that period

Grain is too cheap - not machinery too expensive - I think a similar thread a while ago proved that inflation adjusted its actually cheaper than ever

Problem is grain hasn’t followed inflation - that’s not machinery manufacturers problem though is it
All that tells me is modern kit such as combines can cover the ground quicker, therefore allowing you to cut a grater acreage, gross margin on wheat has not gone up, unfortunately thats the way farming has gone be it arable or livestock you need a large amount to make any money. I make a small amount on wheat because i run an old combine but she is nearing the end of its working life. Don,t say use a contractor, i,ve seen my neighbour waiting in the past when the suns out, even worse when there,s been a wet time and the window becomes smaller like this year. Sorry, but with wheat at 140/ton and 2nd hand combines 6 figure sums, I am looking for some guidance.

Sign of the times then

He'll have his work cut out and his pencil will need to sharpened to 'win' those 3 deals and probably his margins will be cut to ribbons - just like a farmer selling grain this year

What a sad state of affairs for many that work so hard

Totally agree, in the same boat as yourself. I only do the Arable bit because I can "afford" to. I tried expanding the cereals for a couple of years, ended up with less than I started. As it was rented ground we just get kept getting pushed out. I knew then the exact COP, when all the bills were paid there wasn't much left. Scale is such a huge factor.

That’s very true. Expensive kit has a purpose, it’s for chasing increasingly narrow margins over increasingly large areas! Why worry about it? When the time comes some piece of perfectly serviceable secondhand kit will become apparent! It’s a market after all.

@Happy strange that was certain Angus based machinery dealer was telling me he had punted 23 green balers this year as his mechanics were putting wheels on one of them.
Personally have spent very little on machinery this year as we set up for changes that we anticipate due to Brexit. (Currency movement being one) Probably this way for next 2 years barring major breakdown.

do you really think someone buying one of these will only use it for two weeks. You're deluded if you think that.

was thinking this myself if your using it for 2 weeks of the year youv far too much capacity... most cereal growers will be harvesting for atleast 8 weeks a year ....

Ah the rented ground can be a cruel mistress, whatever she gives you she eventually takes back with intrest!! Then you are back where you started .
Chasing scale can make a charity out of you handing out money to everyone and nothing left for yourself ! Even large scale operators like Clive are more intrested in cfas that leave some little margin rather than straight market rents . To many busy fools making up the land agents and mach dealers.

At what point though is x2 770 /780 type machine and considerable change not a far better option ?

The new 8900 is mighty I’m sure but it’s not going to get close to x2 780’s so even allowing for age factoring in some extra downtime where is the case for a single £500k machine ?

Considering a second 770 / 780 here. It would be massive over capacity but way cheaper than trading up to a new 8900.

How much area would you need to justify a new combine nowadays? When I last looked on our 200ha it was way cheaper and easier to get a contractor than buy a new machine every 5 years. Assuming a new machine is £200k, and worth £80k after 5 years that works out @ £120/ha just in depreciation alone. I would need at least 10years ownership and bloody good residuals to even get anywhere near breakeven on a contractors rate. I would guess a £300k machine worth £150k after 5 years over 400ha would just about work? Doesn’t leave you much over to to run one through.
