I've had to read it several times and I think you don't have to do anything if you plan applications so;

the application must be planned so that it does not either:

  • exceed the needs of the soil or crop on that land
  • give rise to a significant risk of agricultural diffuse pollution
If you want an exemption or fear you can't meet this then you need to contact the EA.

I thought they were looking forwards rather than back
I.E. will the grass utilise the nutrients over the coming winter?

I haven’t quite got the handle of it have I?!
From what I can gather it’s more aimed at spreading on maize stubbles etc. where it won’t be utilised until spring incorporation. Autumn spreading on grass can be utilised. If it changes the colour of the grass it’s being utilised… 😉😁

As @Agrivator says, be sensible but act the fool if questioned. They will caution you and don’t wind them up again for a bit. 👍

Thanks chaps.
Then no autumn spreading of fym on silage ground?

i try to apply all my years worth of box manure in the autumn, have the storage for it and spread it thinly over silage ground after 4 th cut is lifted in September. No good doing it in the spring as it takes so long to rot down. We are all grass but have slurry and no crops grown.

Any rule that stops dumping of muck/slurry all winter on stubbles destined for maize has to be a good idea,
Last winter when it was at its wettest, quite a few loads of slurry/digestate were jetted over the hedge on a nearby field with a very slight slope to a watercourse, is it any wonder we get tied up in bearecracy when farmers/ contractors do things like this
