New Massey Ferguson 5S

Wev been massey for years now with only a couple of non mf intruders thrown in but i dont see us buyin a post dynashift massey tbh way u, since the introduction of dyna6 massey has lost a great amout of thier local market share around us for new sales mostly to jd and imho its no wonder as the finished product is just not up to the same standard
Everything was massey here since the 500 series up until fairly recently, last massey to come here was a 5613 which I absolutely hated and had to go within a few minutes months.
I’m still drawn to masseys like a fly to sh!t but sit in the cab of a new one for a short while and I’m getting out thinking don’t want one of them.
Love my 6200 series, would buy a new one of them today over anything on the market.
Also like my fairly basic 7480 without any extra electric gubbins, manual spools and no datatronic screen, there is no longer a basic version of the dyna vt and even if there was I don’t like the modern cab layout .

Newest tractor here is a Case, I could write an essay on what is wrong with it but I certainly wouldn’t swap it for anything massey make at the moment

what was it that you hated so much I've a 5612 and really like it .
bought it second hand to replace a 5455
it spent all summer on sprayer
spraying potatoes found it more comfortable and quieter than 5455

A very good mate of mine who has previously worked a mechanic for MF, JD and NH dealers (he has been service manager at NH dealer) told me that in his opinion the Dyna6 box is one of the most reliable boxes he has worked on and the easiest to rebuild and setup.
He reckons a farmer with a bit of mechanical knowledge could rebuild a Dyna6 box on farm
its a min of £5k in main dealers labour just too split one & shut it back up again & thats before you fit any parts !
there wont be many who would attempt this id bet on farm with basic mechanic skills
that 3rd gear issue has been a real hassle for more people than we get to hear about.
Massey always play it down but ive heard of loads doing it & all the bigger chassis models
never the 6480 size.

Should give his details to @Speedstar

Cab layout and gearbox, never did get to the bottom of how to use the gearbox despite studying the handbook on numerous occasions, a big fail in my book, it just wasn’t simple to select a start off gear to match varying loads, you either seemed to be trying to start off in too high a gear or working up through too many gears, compared to my tractors with the proper dynashift it was awful.
It was regularly stalled at which point the key just wasn’t where it should be adding to the frustration.
Hydraulics were equally poorly set up, the new type switch for raise/lower being just wrong, again compared to my other masseys.
It also had 2 electric spools which you had to fiddle with to get to work, which soon meant it was only hooked to things that could be operated with the 2 manual spools.
Didn’t particularly like the cab trim colour and i seem to remember the switches for functions like 4wd etc weren’t particularly clear on that pad on the cab pillar.

It wasn’t my main tractor but as the newest tractor should have been one of the first to be used. On a mixed farm there’s no such thing as a one driver tractor although it was vaguely intended to be the tractor of choice for my part time employee although inevitably I would be driving it quite a bit too. It was fairly easy for me to avoid most of the time and although I was fairly clear from early on that it needed to go but employee was fairly determined to get used to it .
But when we made some hay at some away ground we fetched a load each home leaving one for the employee to fetch and they asked if they could take my tractor as they just didn’t feel safe driving the 5613 on the road with a load that was the final straw.
Lost a lot of money trading it on but best thing I did with it.
Shame really as it was a nice compact tractor for its power, in many ways size wise better suited to mixed farm use than the Case that replaced it and engine wise performed well, I’m sure power wise it was a match for the Case which is supposed to be 20hp more and plenty brag the CNH engine although I don’t see it myself.
I could write an essay on what’s wrong with the Case, in so many ways it’s not as well built as my Masseys but as a replacement for the 5613 it’s fantastic, it’s a simple straightforward tractor to drive and has the best cab comfort of any of my tractors, it’s almost a favourite but I’m a massey man at heart.

How much an hour is the dealers over with you?

What makes the 3rd gear fault in a Massey any worst than the 50k bearing going in a new Holland.
If both are got in time the repair bill is greatly reduced.

Guessing no much change outta £60/65 unless you ask you never know every invoice ive ever had in last 30+ years never says how many hours spent on a job
just a Labour amount written in after job description & good parts markup also, there all the same pick any dealer & any colour
Speedstar could write a book on Dyna-6 repairs & big big money.
Ask the Claas men & hardly hear of the same gbox giving issues on theres (Hexashift)
most of massey's issue seems too be software iam afraid.
power shift & gear changes all way diff on both brands.

Are you invested in his interests or what as you seen to repeat anything he says as if it was gospel.

The gearbox fails in a class tractor too it's more the fact there is of less the tractors about.

It's a bearing that fails in the gearbox.have you seen one in pieces. I don't believe software causes it to fail

when mine was done i was told changing down between 4 and 3rd range without holding it back on the brakes with heavy loads does the damage to the syncro

my 6480 is 99% the time in Auto mode for gears & maybes coming from 4f to 3f in manual is the problem?>
which it would never do in Auto ???
I presume you come down the dynashifts a bit before changing into 3rd gear? even if you were in say 4B & changed into 3F that would be fairly smooth surely?
on the 40k version 3rd gear in F dynashift is a higher speed than 4A non of them issues on a 50k gbox
you dont seem to have as flexible gbox options on all 76/77 series then after (unsure) driven them both here as demos all 50k versions
