New milk silo

Keep your old one and put a horizontal one out side? With block calving having The choice of a smaller tank would be handy surely.
Even outside the dairy we’ve not that much spare room but we may well try and keep our old one too as a buffer tank. With that said we’re fairly convinced that it’s the source of a niggly bacto issue due to its inability to cook the milk quick enough

GEA here.
Good luck get in to any of them if you need to and are, er, chunky.

You will either need to site manway built in to a room or have a cabinet made (suppliers usually source and fit but make sure it's included in price along with light and wash basin).
Also make sure you can washdown around them as milk seems to like traveling all around the circumference
Oh, and ask how it cleans. Wash balls vary and the ability to put a third chem in is useful.
Don't get hung up on price as recovering bacto bonus will cover any extra

How do you get along with cooling? Think you put a snap chiller in?

30k mueller here. Go bigger than an artic, the extra cost is negligible. Cooled through a 3.5t Ice bank, 2 compressors on the silo but don’t rely on silo to cool much

As with post above, you need an alternative cooling source as silos have limited surface area compared to conventional.
Point about capacity is valid too in terms of future expansion plans, ability to hold extra milk if tanker doesn't come and cost being relatively negligible assuming no cooling plates.

Yes we have a snap chiller plus a borehole fed plate cooler so milk enters tank at between 6-7 degs and 9hp of dx cooling on silo takes out the rest.
Chiller is cheaper to run than ice builder unless you have a very cheap overnight power rate

Mueller here replacing a p poor fabdec that had a two stage plate cooler , but still all four comps seemed to run most of the day and regularly needed replacing.Pleased to see the back of it !
