Got some building work to do to convert a building for a 10/20 parlour. Not got plans yet.
Any info helpful as to length of pit needed and width of standings

I know someone who went from 80 cows to 180 cows overnight .you just don't know what opportunities are round the corner be it in 1 year 5 years or 10 years
100 extra cows, is that an opportunity or an extra millstone? I keep going back to saying how I'm milking 100 in a 10 unit and I can have it all done and dusted in 100 minutes. And I'm happy out with that.

most parlour pumps seem to be specced for 14 or 16 units before they get bigger, so there won't be much difference in cost for a 12 or 14 unit parlour. They can always put a 10/20 in a 12 or 14 unit stall work.

my 12/24 is 39' overall, so 2 20' bays would be fine, but it depends on what design the parlour is. Most will require several RSJs or 2.5m high walls for hanging the stallwork.

I get so fed up with people thinking they are experts on everyone else's farm. Bob has said how many cows the farmer has and his acreage. He also mentioned it is putting a parlour into an existing building. Not everyone has wonderful expanses of open yards or handy places to put parlours in and expand magically overnight to 500 cows. We upgraded from a 6/6 abreast to a 12/12 herringbone nearly 4 years ago. I was also told umpteen times we should be going bigger. Even though we were putting up a new shed we did not have the physical space to go bigger without building a whole green field unit from scratch. With our 80-90 cows a 12/12 is perfect and as a s/h purchase was dirt cheap as no one else wanted to buy that size of parlour. We will not be expanding as we just don't have the space and in our 50's with no kids will be quite happy to stop milking when we want to without feeling we have to get on the more cows treadmill. But we needed to change from that 6/6 (60 cows) or quit then. Perhaps the farmer who is having a 10/20 feels the same way. It's not our farm so we don't know.

The most sensible post on here. The lad is in his early thirties father 65
When foot and mouth came in 2001 his dad told him he better find a job away. He joined the army for 9 years. Came home and is making a go of running his little family farm. Currently milking in an ancient abreast parlour for 3 hours each end of day. Decided to invest a bit in a new parlour and slurry storage and just to pee off the ones who know best he is ONLY putting in a 8/16 but making it big enough to go to a 10/20
It’s what he can afford. Putting it where some cubicles are and putting cubicles in silage clamp and has a new outside clamp already
Not everyone is factory farming cows inside all year round !
