I got a Posch PTO tilting saw. £900 secondhand. A brilliant piece if kit. I have it on my MF135 and it literally cuts up rounds as fast as you can push the blade backwards and forwards. There's a video below but they also make a PTO version which I have. It really is as fast as that, and quite safe unless you are an idiot! I have it set up so the logs fall into the tractor bucket.

If you want idiot proof safe then a browns sliding top is hard to beat with the log cutting full guarded blade. I have used mine so much the metal has worn into small holes. Quite often use it on site in the wood rather than dragging stuff out for the Palax.

I have an Oxdale PTO saw which seems pretty well covered. I run it with the IH 434 which is a bit overkill really.

Good saws.

My opinions on safe sawbench use is to take your time, never rush. Never cross the blade with your hands, even if the table has returned or blade cover back in place (depends on saw you have) otherwise you will eventually do it too soon and come to grief.
I’ve built my own and only stay one side of the blade, that way it can’t get me. Saw benches are safe in general, the blade stays in the same place so the only way it can get you is if you put your hand in it.
I have an elevator to take the sawn logs away, that’s another point where danger can be if logs are allowed to build up.
Oxdale seem a good design.

Have used a Major for past 4 yrs. It has given excellent service and safe to use. The wheels make it easy push into the corner of the shed when not in use and its easy to hitch on and off the tractor. Normally run it at 1000 rpm with the revs knocked back to give 540 - tractor at high tickover so very economical to run. I also park it beside the front loader and logs drop straight in. Only fault I could mention is - as supplied, the bottom of blade guard has a number of small slots to allow chippings / sawdust out. These slots are too small and prone to blocking, especially if cutting with the grain ( I tend to do this occasionally if there is a knot in the log as opposed to trying to split with an axe) . I enlarged the slots with an angle grinder and have had no problems since.

If you are working alone, a lot of these saw benches are great on short pieces of wood, but often I have 4 to 8’ long timber to cut. I modified my browns so that the uncut log doesn’t fall to the ground. All I have done is extend the table by 4’ with thick tin sheet and two lengths of tube to act as table legs which just pivot on bolts so that it parallelograms as you slide the table forward. Saves a lot of bending down. (y) I have had one for 21 years and only replaced the main bearings in that time.
Much safer to use than the old bench from years ago which was belt driven from a vintage tractor with only a small guard over the top of the blade. It also was a two man job where you had to work in sync to avoid binding as it cut.

Had one for years, brilliant for splitting logs with the grain or smaller stuff cross grain. Nice and simple to use as well and auto returning blade saves time. Can cut cross grain on fence posts and up to 6 inch diameter logs/ branches.

Yeh your dads right, I have an old sliding table mc Connell, cuts well and nice to use
but I did think the other day its an accident waiting to happen...will need to replace it.
Iv been doing firewood for 37 yrs now and lost bits of fingers over the years
back in the day, it was considered just an accident, goes with the territory attitude, but we must all think more safety these days...may be more than a finger :( Them old things won't come close to today's h&s standards
