Done,
I am actually a statistic.. Helmet probably saved my life when I was 19.
Was out slug pelleting..my ears got really cold...so I decided to put on the Helmet.. the next load... the quad's CV joint seized mid flight whilst in the field... thrown me possibly 20 foot.. quad came down and landed on my head.. smashing the helmet in two... I don't remember much for the next few days after that
Amazed at that always struggle to come up with a good excuse other than u have to when slugs pelletting as so steady. Sorry to hear what happened but your story may save others.

Dear all,

We would like to invite you to participate in a 20min online survey study designed to investigate farmer thoughts and attitudes towards ATV riding and helmet wearing. We are a pair of researchers from the University of Aberdeen, School of Psychology (you can read more about our research here: https://research.abdn.ac.uk/applied-psych-hf/).

The study itself involves taking part in an online survey which should take no longer than 20 to 30mins to complete. The survey will include questions about ATV regulations, your thoughts on ATV safety and the use of PPE such as helmets. The survey is anonymous, and so we will not ask you for any potentially identifying information (such as your name). Any farmer, farm worker or contractor in the UK or Ireland is welcome to take part – you just need to be aged 18 or over and have used a sit astride ATV at some point for farming purposes.
For further information on the study, and to take part, just click this link to be taken directly to the survey: http://viis.abdn.ac.uk/snapwebhost/s.asp?k=160321339769

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Given most quads have odometers and hourmetres, is there any correlation between average speed and serious or fatal accidents?
My average speed on a quad is just over 8km/hr but my average speed on a mountain bike is probably double that.

If it becomes law for riders to wear a helmet, how do they intend to enforce it? Have clip board carrying job's worths lurking in the bushes with binoculars? They can't seem to understand that a law that can't be enforced is bad law. Will it make me wear a helmet on my own land? I decline to answer on the grounds that I may incriminate myself! :)

When you get off the bike to open or close a gate, what's the world record for the distance the bike travels, backwards or forwards, before the rider has managed to catch up with it?

With or without a helmet!!!1

Thanks very much to all those who have taken part thus far - we are halfway there in terms of participant numbers which is brilliant! If you are able to take part we would really appreciate it - if we get the same numbers again this week we will be finished with recruitment in record time!

Glad this has popped up again. It seemed to be a bit of a discussion which is always good. I have what amounts to a roll cage on my quad. It was initially constructed to carry a large pro video camera and recorder, back in the days when this was a two man job. Then, with a swivel light, used for rabbit control. But it is also a useful platform for putting in fence posts, transporting items, etc. so a very useful piece of equipment I would not want to be without.

The point is, I don't believe a helmet is necessary with a roll cage -- or they'd be making us wear one on a cabless tractor instead of having a roll bar.
