New TB Testing Rules next year

More cattle testing?
Six monthly in HRA unless you've been clear for 6 years, 90 days between SI tests and some at our expense. That was the gist of the last consultation. I've no idea if all/any of that is to be implemented though.

Which basically means farmers will be shut down from buying in for longer and it will take longer to go clear!

Of course if its implemented then the worst thing will be the new TB compo rules where you only get HALF the table value for any animal you buy in when under TB2 which then goes down under that notice .

( ie for example say the table valuation is £1000 you will ONLY get paid £500 )

An interesting conversation took place between yours truly and various influential bodies, including APHA's two advice centres last week re the 60 day window for selling cattle after a clear test.
Simple question one would have thought (and it has been discussed here but I couldn't find it)

When does that 60 day window start?

The answers were more than contradictory and below is a thumb nail of them.

(Sorry - off topic a bit.) :)

c'mon @matthew that's not really contradictory. The NFU was wrong (unsure why you'd ask them), as was a telephone answering person, who provided the correct information. Are you running out of blog post ideas? ;)

You're not 1 year old when you are born, you have 60 clear days (from injection) from when you can sell tested clear cattle. It's crystal clear that the day they are tested is day 0.

I’m pretty berluddy angry at the different answers @bovine and three days can mean a great deal and it was contradictory. How else would you describe it?

The NFU answer was from one of their TB team.. The other ‘reading day’ verbal answer was from the new TB so called advice service. Which is why I asked it in writing as I knew it was wrong.
Not a great start.

Now I do know that the 60 days starts at jab day, but if I did not? And took the verbal info as correct? What I was unsure of was the start of the period, being close to the wire on a sale, hence the query.

So what if cattle were sold with a reading day test date, fairly close to the closing of the selling window, and were not presented at the purchasers TB test as apparently were within 58 days of their own test? And this was subsequently found to be incorrect, the cattle were actually 61 days and should have been tested?.
This happened and the result, as I understand it, was a 5% deduction from the purchaser’s BPS payment. So it is important.

And no, we aren’t short of blog material . Too much sometimes.

But as there is so much confusion amongst ‘ them wot should know better ‘ on such a simple question, we thought it best to clarify. And lord help us on anything more complicated.

Just sayin’.

:scratchhead:

Right @bovine you first need to say sorry to @matthew, many many people have/are benefiting from the excellent advice that Matthew gives, very clear bovine that you have no clue about TB or the devastating affects it has on farmers when they get shut down and in some cases see all their animals culled and have no income/ cannot restock for at least 6 months!

Its far from clear when the 60 days start, I personally have a friend who has been docked 5% of their BPS because the seller of the store cattle he bought used the day the cattle were read as the first day of the 60 days, thus my friend and his vet didn't test these cattle when my friend had a whole herd TB test as the paperwork showed the cattle were tested within the last 60 days when they actually had been tested 63 days ago thus should have been tested!

Utter disgrace and totally unacceptable that a TB advisory service set up by groups including the NFU/AHDB are giving out incorrect information on a simple question on a very serious subject! I dread to think what information they are giving out on more serious questions farmers in a desperate situation are asking them!

NFU have TB experts ( well they call themselves experts but actually know sweet fa ) who are there for members like Matthew to go to and ask questions and help about TB like Matthew did!

As a vet your condescending attitude towards matthew defies belief!

TB is a notifiable disease and if a farmer breaks the movement rules for cattle then the ramifications can be massive, matthew did the correct thing by asking the question, your way was/ is the total opposite of what any farmer who finds themselves shut down with Tb should be doing.

Matthew please keep up the good work(y) as its much appreciated by a LOT of farmers like myself.

Jab day is day 0,so day 1 is the next day, this is the information I've always been given both from my own vet,AHPA and 2 different auctioneers.

This always appears to be correct when i receive my testing window dates, the only difference being if they remove reactors 60 days is then counted from day of removal.

Although they claim to take reactors within ten days my last 3 weren't removed until 22 days after reading the test.

22 days sounds quick, but did have ours removed within 5 days this time , neighbour has his after 5 weeks.
