Probably gonna open up a can of worms here but here goes !

My current car is a 2010 (60) plate Toyota rav 4 and I'm thinking of getting a newer one it won't be new probably a couple of years old.

My wife's car is a Volvo v40 and I really like it to drive so the obvious choice would be an xc 60 but I quite like the look of the Nissan Xtrail and Mazda cx5 as well.

So does anyone have any of the above cars ?

My wife went from v40 to XC60 so she could tow a horsebox, it’s been a good motor and goes well. Compared to the v40 the xc is a bit more boaty when pushing it hard:eek:.
We would happily buy an xc again (y).

Had a V40 as family car when children were young, was upset when wife wanted a Golf as she’d always wants one, gone back to Volvo as children bigger (teenagers) and want more leg space! Got an XC 60 which I absolutely love. Tried a new discovery sport, ok but not as comfortable and more £s. Don’t think you’re go wrong with a XC.

I once test drove an X Trail.

Almost got seasick from watching the bonnet rattle around in front of me - I judged it to be very poorly put together. That was 2005, so things may have changed a lot since then of course.

We had a cx-5 here and thankfully now it has gone.

More recalls than you could shake a stick at, expensive to run. Hard of fuel for the type of car it is. Couldn’t get better than 33mpg. Luckily got rid recently before mot and it’s failed miserably when you look online. Maybe we had a bad one. But it was only a 14 plate with 36000 miles on I wouldn’t have expected the problems we had with it.

The v40 we have I can't say it's massive inside but fine for 4 larger adults the passenger seat is cramped but only really height wise as it's not height adjustable and sits a bit too high for a 6ft man

Other model Volvos do exist! It's not like the V60 is hugely massive compared to the V40.

Wife has XC60, would not dream of having her and the kids in anything else. Once you have tried Volvo, you won't change, anything else just feels a bit daft. Safety and sure footed. Believe me, I have tried but you won't get an XC60 to misbehave, a hooligans car it is not.

Beware, not all XC models are actually AWD, check the one you intend to buy is!

What was up with it?
On my second CX5 first was a 2012 (I think) 2.0L petrol current one is a 2017 2.5 petrol. Really like them, never had a problem with them, other than a very slow AC leak on the first one that took a bit of finding.

Would the Volvo be in a different price bracket to the other 2?
Mrs pom had an older shape x trail for a while (work car) which was fine,
The CX 5 is currently one of the more popular smaller SUV's here, don't know the numbers but I'd bet most are petrol's.
When I bought my first cx5 I tried a Hyundai ix35, ford Kuga (?) Holden Captiva- known as craptivas in these parts- and had a look at the VW Tiguan. Just thought the Mazda felt the most modern and was a good deal as they had an ex demo.
No regrets, traded it for a new one in 2017(y)
Mazda might not quite have the image if such things matter:unsure:

Yeah the Volvo will definitely be more expensive but not sure how much yet as I've not really priced anything yet but at a guess at least 3k in it

Image certainly doesn't come into it for me it'll be the one that fits us best for future use
