We went to a demo of the new JD like @Shutesy s and despite it working in a very poor crop it was very impressive, I can see how they have improved all the points that slow combines down, the vast intake and drum width plus twin rotary separation will shift crop through at a hell of a rate.
Can’t work in the wet though!

It doesn’t rain during harvest under conservation agriculture methods don’t you know

Have you changed farm away from your management position you had going DD?
Yes. I was made redundant from that job as one of the owners sadly passed away and the only option for the remaining owner due to family circumstances was to rent the land out so I had to move on. Slightly different scale of operation now but the new employers are fantastic and I'm thoroughly enjoying it, though no DD atm.

our large farm down the road had one of them ten all season and had a van and the panels up quiet often , carne see them replacing there 4 or 5 with 2 , would be better when they move in convoy:)
While I can't say for sure, no doubt there may well of been breakdowns but they used last season as a development season so were doing mods in the field and looking at all aspects that may need improving as well as checking religiously for losses so just because there was a van there and the panels up doesn't mean it was actually broken down. They were only out on demo as far as I know so they were only additional machines on the farms were they were running not replacement machines.

All the very best to you on the new enterprise

Given that 6 yr old S680s did roughly 2000 plus acres each last year with 30 ft headers I think this new machine can do considerably more! Agreed when its raining it doesn't matter what combine you have but this machine will go like heck when it dries up and we have the capability to run it well into the night if needed.

I find one combine doing thousands of acres in the UK a bit of a head scratcher, surely you're cutting crops when they're not fit?
Interestingly contractors with SP forage harvesters seem to go the other way. Much more capacity than needed with 900hp to pick a bit of grass up.

Round here, where there's more reliable weather at harvest, farms still seem to run more combines and have extra capacity. Crack on when the weather and crops fit and don't dry much of it.

4000 acres of UK stuff I think I'd want 3 combines.
