New toy day

Given that 6 yr old S680s did roughly 2000 plus acres each last year with 30 ft headers I think this new machine can do considerably more! Agreed when its raining it doesn't matter what combine you have but this machine will go like heck when it dries up and we have the capability to run it well into the night if needed.

It can go like heck I’m sure but you’ve spent £500k on the big machine, then suddenly need another tractor, trailer and driver on top of your normal amount service it. Then you need a bigger drier and larger wet tip area.

So even when it’s not raining your big machine can still be stood waiting doing nothing.

These large units growing 2000ac of wheat. Today that’s £140k of milling premiums give or take. Assuming the premium level stays where it is that’s £700k over a 5 year combine life cycle.

Not quite sure why the Spanish Inquisition about the big combine. I’m sure the owners that are going to run it will have weighed up all the possible pro’s & cons in their personal situation. It looks great & best of luck to them.

Meantime, at the other end of the spectrum, I look forward to trying out my new to me 35 year old JD 1065 when harvest arrives!😂

Are you sure that it will be big enough? What happens if it breaks down? Are you sure you shouldn't have 2 combines on your acreage?

2000-2500 ac max for any of the largest machines. I don’t care what the sales literature has said or farmer ‘jones’ from Outer Mongolia did last year ‘apparently’.

A new 40ft 600hp monster is cutting the same as a 10ft 100hp 30 year old machine in 2012 when the whole country flooded, which is precisely zero tonnes when it’s raining.

One things for sure though the cost of harvesting is increasing ten fold and it’s becoming harder and harder to justify a combine. Thank god for ELMS is all I can say. When they release the next two tiers it’ll be interesting.

On a large estate where I used to work they have cut around 2900 - 3200 acres depending on cropping for dairys etc since 2006 with one combine New Holland CR first two 30ft cut and next two 35ft and I'm now lead to believe it's 40ish ft. The last few years they have finished cutting 2 to 3 weeks earlier than when they ran 3 axial flows or JD straw walkers. A lot to be said on the cropping having blocks of land in the same crop to max machine output. The first year they went to one combine they had an agreement with dealer that if needed a demo combine could be brought over to help out. Never needed only on the last year the combine was on farm to try out the new machine.

Having a brilliant operator also helps as more often or not they can tell a bearing is on its way out etc before it lets you down.

We bought a new fuel tank.
The old metal tanks are too low to gravity feed into the tractors when the level gets low and we keep having diesel issues in cold weather.

This is a bit bigger than we need at 2500l but you don't have to fill it do you...
Has a mains pump, counter, filter, light and a level sensor, we got far too excited about this purchase....

From what we can work out we shouldn't need another tractor and trailer. What we gain in output from the combine the trailers should cover it by not having to run between 2 combines that might not have always been right next to each other even when working togethor. It will also cut out the situation of if the 2 previous machines were split up they might need 2 trailers each whereas now we shouldn't have that problem. We have 2 spare trailers if needed and the tractors/drivers to pull them as well if required on long hauls.
All the farms we cut on have decent grainstores and the drier is no slouch and there is plenty of wet storage space available, as well as central storage space, the amount of grain cut should be the same as a normal year and the rate it comes in should be similar or just a bit more than when we had the 2 machines.
We've got roughly 2300 acres of wheat to cut but only about 400-500 is milling wheat, The rest is feed.
