Thinking about getting a new livestock box, currently have a Graham Edwards there local which is a plus, but the decks are a bit numb. Thinking of ifor or nugent as a change what's people's thoughts?

I’ve never seen a gamic in my life....no one in the north has one that I’ve seen but when I’ve looked at the houghton it looked excelllent quality
Two neighbours have just bought Gamics and they look pretty good but they said 9 month lead time and 9k for a 12 foot one. One says the decks don’t lift to the roof like a houghten so can be awkward to wash out the bottom deck. Just repeating what has been said to me though, I don’t know much about them. Pal just swapped his 6 year Ifor for 3k (£5400) for a new 12 foot triple with the wheels underneath so that explains why they are so popular even with their faults.

Bateson may well be the lightest in any category. Are the decks up to much though?
No they’re bloody awful. Lead up ramp is part of the top deck and folds down within the trailer. So if you want a full deck up top, you have to lift the ramp up with 2-3 sheep stood on it. Oh and also keep an eye on others trying to jump out next to you. Bateson great for cattle, truly awful for sheep.

Have just swapped the 10yr old Bateson 12’ in for a Nugent 12’. Very impressed. Built to last! It’s actually a pleasure to load sheep up. No swear words and no hernia!

We have an ifor 14 Tri axle with the wheels underneath it's been pretty good but the agreed the deck system would drive you mad if spending a full day hauling sheep, next trailer here will be either a Nugent or porter they seem better built

Cross the border and come and see my Gamic if you like . My brother is on to his 2 nd ifor since I’ve had mine . 1 puncture, and the odd squirt of grease on the lifting deck pulley the only cost since I bought it !

Everyone local to me runs Ifor Williams but I have a 14 foot twin axle Nugent with Decks in. I havnt met anyone who hasnt been impressed with my trailer and commented on the build quality. When parked next to an Ifor there's no competition. Ifor are like Jd tractors and JCB loaders poeple buy them because that's what they've always had not what is best. Which ever brand you buy you will be able to sell it for nearly what you paid for it in 10 years time.

This interests me! I was looking at the Nugent too, and I reckon the 14ft twin axle would be ideal... you just never see anyone with one.

How do you get on with it loaded? Use it with cattle much?

@beardface i have a 12’ nugent with decks, wheels outside. Only issue I have with it is the latch to move the tailboard from bottom deck to top deck isn’t the easiest to do and needs a good kick but I think my spring is stretched.

At the time I could have a nugent for £250 more than the ifor but nugent has the open front and nugent was immediate delivery and ifor was 28week delivery, I know someone who ordered a ifor same time as I bought the nugent and they were still waiting at 36weeks.

Well I think it's either nugent or GE. Might pop back to GE and have a look at a new one as the rear deck ramp looks lighter and easier on the new ones. Just wonder if fold away decks on nugent might be a nice change as wind away when it gets worn or twisted etc can be a bloody nightmare at times

Had a 10ft nugent tipper trailer before. Was a damn heavy trailer. Think it weighted near 1.5tonne empty. Good heavy steel, but was a pig to tow and was as awkward to hitch up. Also ate jockey wheels. Coincidentally the land cruiser ate two clutches and a gearbox during our time of ownership of that trailer. Went back to Ifors after that.

How do people go on with indesoension trailers? Only ones i have ever come into contact with always end up going knackered.

I have a 14’ Gamic and wouldn’t even look at a different make when (eventually) it might want changing. Had IW’s for years at home, changing every 3 years (because they were about knackered by then) for one that was each built worse than the last. I wouldn’t even consider one now. My Gamic is welded together, rather than pop riveted, so it’s still in remarkably good order after 7 years. It’s always towed a lot more smoothly than the 12 & 14’ Ifors we had before and the lifting deck is a revelation.

I sell a lot of rams from home, so get to see quite a few trailers in various states. The only one that has come close to impressing me as much as the Gamic for build quality, has been a Nugent.

The one downside of the Gamic hydraulic deck system, is that it doesn’t lift right to the roof. However, that’s because the top deck is a solid, welded unit, which is incredibly strong and doesn’t allow pee to dribble down onto stock underneath. It will still be doing exactly the same job a decade down the line.
The Houghton system utilises a seal round a flat deck, which rubs/seals against the walls as it goes up & down. In time, that seal is going to fail & need replacement, or you will end up with pee dribbling down the sides. I’d take the Gamic over a Houghton every time for that reason, although i’m Pretty sure the Gamic doesn’t come with the all important swanky alloy wheels that the Houghton does.

The advantage of the GE over the Nugent is the ability to use 1/3 0r 2/3 of the deck which would allow me to carry a quad or hurdles, on the back. All the Nugents I've seen are the whole deck or nothing.

No!

We have had our Ifor 18 years with no complaints on the ramp or deck. Lambs and ewes run up no bother. It works well and is easy to use - at home or at markets.

Our next trailer will be a Nugent though - same ramp and deck system as the Ifor but better built
