Having re read the whole thing, https://www.gov.uk/government/consu...king-tax-digital-for-vat-legislation-overview , I believe you are right about the 85 threshold. However it says that if you do creep over the 85, if you drop back down you will still have to use mtd compatible software unless you deregister.
Don't worry, I believe it is coming to us all! Not good introducing it in the month following the drop out tho!!!

I believe most old farmers will do what most old farmers do, pay a book keeping lady who will turn up with a laptop and fill in the VAT returns after creating them some login details using whatever choice of software they like best.

I use one of those farming book keeping lady's ... just as you say turns up with laptop and all sorted, I can then stay outside and do what I do best farm work (y)

You can register part of you business as a separate business to avoid the VAT threshold if it is genuinely supplying a distinct service or product.

They have already made it impossible for us to submit our VAT return due to this extra security. It was difficult enough to submit the return on an unreliable broadband system but then to expect confirmation by phone when the BT landline was disconnected 5 years ago due to not working every time it rained and the mobile phone only works when you have signal on the hill top. Vat solution offered is for them to phone at a predetermined time when we can arrange to be in the middle of the field to obtain signal. At which point we can go through a mountain of security and they estimate a quarterly return will take 15 minutes to submit and they will not be responsible if the return is submitted incorrectly. Have suggested we will revert back to using paper returns but apparantly that is no longer an option despite what there website says.

Put a 4G broadband router with an external antenna up on the hill and use a WiFi connection to shoot the signal back to your house....

Not much point in having them then if these so called "accountancy packages", as as good as they seem then ?
The software packages are great, get all the data put in right and the bookkeeping is done. Accountant can then focus on stuff that is of more value to you, capital allowances, farmers averaging, business structure, pension contributions.
There is a difference between an accountant and a bookkeeper.
