New Weaving Sabre Tine

Has anyone seen the new Sabre Tine in the flesh? Does it look as though it will cope any better with chopped straw?

Saw the 6m version at Lamma. Was quite impressed with it overall, looked to have some good features on it and well built. My only concern would be the weight, it looked fairly heavy before putting any seed in it. Probably ideal in the dry, perhaps not so much in the wet like this year. Overall quite a versatile drill IMO. I wouldn't mind having one on demo if they do them.

Apparently the brackets at the front of the coulter frame are for some kind of roller, so potentially even heavier still. However you need a bit of weight to stop the thing skipping about on tough ground IMO.
I think a 6m would realistically need 200hp and decent lift capacity similar to a Claydon without the front tines in.The coulters look like they are staggered enough to get through anchored lower biomass cover crops, but I think there will be a limit.
Importantly, the drill is equipped with a double harrow to help cover the seed in difficult conditions.
Any one know how low disturbance it really is with this type of coulter which looks similar to the Amazone Cayena?

Currently running 3 row version, pleased with the disturbance considering it's an all round drill. 6m takes some lifting but tractor uses 6l/ha when drilling cereal/rape in to stubble and 9l/ha for beans at 4inches in to stubble. First year with the drill and haven't managed to give it a fair test but pleased considering the conditions. Have ordered the new 4 row model but keeping this one till we have other one on farm.

Have you been using the drill straight into undisturbed stubble? I have ordered an ld topsoiler off weaving to use with our carrier and kuhn megant.

Had good results with spring barley in to stubble and all our rape this autumn was in to stubble but the weather has made it a right off, looked ok in October.

We had the LD on demo, was very pleased with it, we are changing our shakearator legs over to LD points when funds allow

I saw the new sabre tine at Lamma. Looks a good well made drill but as said it does seem heavy. The brackets on the front are potentially for cutting discs I was told by Weaving salesman.

The old style does take some lifting, doesnt take a lot of pulling just need that lift capacity

Yes we heard that about the discs too

Yes I have but the sumo is 3.25m wide, the metcalf legs are very good and low disturbance. We can end up running it deeper than need be at times around 12" deep on leg spacings of 650mm with 10" wings. It is a subsoiler at the end of the day and when needed will be run 16" deep or more. Going to keep it for subsoiling when needed.( Dad would not sell it.)
The Ld topsoiler I ordered is 5m 13 leg spaced at 384mm but will run at a max of 9" deep. I will aim to run it at 7" deep and go no more than 6k forward speed hence 5m rather than 4m machine.
Would rather go slower on a wider working width.

Blocked with what? What were you drilling into?

Anything chopped straw it would block. The clearance from the frame to the ground isn’t enough.
With linseed we baled the straw off then had to lightly disc to remove combine and baling wheelings. This was a nightmare because the stalks then were hooked by the tines and it was blocking literally every few yards. Had to combi drill it in the end.
Also had it blocking in various cover crops.

First outing with our new sabre tine, very impressed so far only done 30ac in to some stocky soils and it’s buried the seed well and with 6195r Deere in front 10k forward speed is very comfortable, very simple drill hope to use it mostly direct this year, it is heavy that’s for sure.

Did you manage to drill much, how heavy is she APJ?

Keep us posted, looks like it could be a useful tool with no packer roller to bung up. Still not sure if its best to move more or less soil when conditions are a little less than ideal.

You need tilth on clay so in these conditions so strip till is the way to go. We have failed JD 750a crops as the slots didn’t close very well and they filled up with water and slugs.
